What Syracuse’s NIT title means

The Syracuse Basketball team won the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) on Thursday night defeating Texas, 81-63. It is the school’s fifth NIT title and first since 1966.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said winning the NIT was “a great achievement” for his young team. “Our guys really stepped up,” he said.

The win capped a turnaround season for the Orange, who were just 19-15 overall and 10-8 in the ACC. They lost to Pittsburgh in the second round of the ACC tournament and then ran off four straight wins in the NIT to take home the title.

For Syracuse, it was a much-needed boost after a disappointing end to the regular season The Orange had high hopes of making a run in the NCAA Tournament but those hopes were dashed when they lost in the ACC Tournament

Boeheim said winning the NIT “makes up for a lot” of that disappointment. He added that it was a great experience for his young players who will be better for it next season.

Sophomore guard Buddy Boeheim was named the NIT’s Most Outstanding Player after averaging 20 points per game in the four tournament wins. He had a career-high 31 points in Thursday’s win over Texas.

The Syracuse Basketball Program has now won five National Championships including one NCAA title (2003).

1. A strong start: Syracuse led by as many as 11 points in the first half and took a 30-23 lead into halftime. The Orange shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, while TCU was at just 26 percent.

2. Battling back: The Horned Frogs rallied to take a 40-39 lead with 9:34 remaining in the game. But Syracuse responded with an 8-0 run to take control for good.

3. Free throws down the stretch: With Syracuse leading 49-48, freshman Tyus Battle hit four straight Free throws to give the Orange some breathing room. Battle finished with 12 points, all in the second half.

4. A big block: With Syracuse leading 53-52 and under a minute remaining,TCU’s Kouat Noi went up for a layup but was denied by Paschal Chukwu, who had eight blocks in the game. That gave possession back to Syracuse, and Frank Howard hit two free throws to extend the lead to 55-52 with 16 seconds left.

What Syracuse’s NIT title means for the future

The Syracuse men’s basketball team has won the NIT championship, and while it may not be the NCAA tournament title that the Orange were hoping for, it’s still a big achievement.

It’s been a rough few years for Syracuse Basketball as the team has gone through two head coaching changes and faced allegations of sexual abuse by a former Assistant Coach

But under head coach Jim Boeheim, the team has fought through all of that and come out on top.

The win is a much-needed boost for the program, and it should give the team confidence heading into next season.

It also shows that Syracuse is still one of the top basketball programs in the country, despite all of the off-court distractions.
