They are located in San Antonio Texas, and play their home games at Nelson Wolff Stadium which opened on April 7, 1994 and seats 8,466 fans.[2] The Missions replaced Triple-A Albuquerque in both Amarillo and Albuquerque after that franchise was purchased by Peter Angelos and moved to Baltimore as part of his purchase of that city’s Orioles franchise after it was announced that National League baseball would be returning there for 1992.[3] The Oakland Athletics had originally planned to move their triple-A affiliate from Tacoma to Albuquerque for 1992 but due to Angelos’ purchase they were forced to reassess.[4][5] Amarillo had lost its minor league team following an unsuccessful attempt to lure triple-A affiliation away from Albuquerque[6] so they were receptive when San Antonio approached them about relocating there following Albuquerque’s loss.[7]
