Tomball Memorial High School is proud to offer a baseball program that has a rich tradition of success. Our program has produced numerous championship teams and individual players who have gone on to find success at the collegiate and professional levels.

We are committed to developing our players both on and off the field, and we instill in them the values of hard work sportsmanship, and teamwork. Our goal is to prepare our players for success in whatever path they choose in life.

The Early Years

Tomball Memorial high school has a long and proud tradition of excellence in baseball. The program was started in the early 1990s and has been a powerhouse ever since. The team has won numerous conference and district titles, as well as making several trips to the State Tournament

Early on, the team was led by Head Coach Jerry Garcia, who helped build the foundation for what would become a legacy of success. Garcia was succeeded by Bob Townsend, who took the team to new heights, including a trip to the state semifinals in 2000. Townsend retired after the 2006 season, and was replaced by Steve Lynch. Lynch led the team to another state semifinal appearance in 2008.

The current head coach is Kyle McCutcheon, who took over in 2012. Under McCutcheon’s leadership, the team has won two conference championships and made three trips to the playoffs.

The First Team

In the spring of 1978, a group of young men came together to form the first Tomball Memorial high school baseball team With hard work and dedication, they quickly became a force to be reckoned with on the diamond. Over the next four decades, the Tomball Memorial high school baseball program would go on to achieve great things, winning multiple State Championships and producing numerous Major League Baseball players.

The first team was led by Head Coach Jack Hurt, who would go on to lead the program for 25 years. His teams were known for their disciplined play and toughness. Under his guidance, the Tomball Memorial High school baseball program established itself as one of the best in the state of Texas.

In his time as Head coach Coach Hurt led the team to six state championships and four runner-up finishes. He was named Coach of the Year multiple times by various organizations and was inducted into the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2006. He retired from coaching in 2003 with a career record of 861-294-4.

Since Coach Hurt’s retirement, the Tomball Memorial high school baseball program has continued to thrive. The teams have won two more State Championships and have produced several more Major League Baseball players. The legacy of excellence established by the first team continues to this day, and it is clear that Tomball Memorial high school is a place where great things happen on the diamond.

The First Season

In 1978, the first season of Tomball Memorial high school baseball the team had a record of nineteen wins and two losses. The team was coached by Gary Denton. The starting lineup for that first season was as follows:
-Pitcher: Jerry Hendrix
-Catcher: Mark Stephens
-First Base: Kentravis Bouie
-Second Base: Dwayne Berset
-Third Base: David Vessel
-Shortstop: Todd Denton
-Outfielders: Tim Kincaid, Mark Tate, and Steve Waldrop

The First Game

On February 15, 1964, the first game in Tomball Memorial high school baseball history was played. The opponent was Brenham high school and the game was played at Memorial Stadium. Brenham won the game by a score of 7-2, but that did not dampen the enthusiasm of the young Tomball team. They would go on to win their first game the next day against Bellaire High School

The First Win

In March of 2019, the Tomball Memorial high school (TMHS) varsity baseball team won their first game of the season against Klein Cain high school This was not only the first game of the season, but also the first game in the history of TMHS Baseball. The young program had finally achieved its first victory after two years of hard work and dedication.

The win was a special moment for the team, coaches, and fans alike. For the players, it was a validation of their efforts and a sign that their hard work was paying off. For the coaches, it was a moment of pride and satisfaction, knowing that they had built a winning team from scratch. And for the fans, it was a moment of joy and excitement, as they watched their team achieve something special.

Under the direction of head coach Tim Reid, the Tomball Memorial Mustang baseball team has won back-to-back State Championships The team is currently ranked No. 1 in the state of Texas and is one of the top programs in the country.

The school also has a new head coach Chris Johnson Coach Johnson is a former professional baseball player who played for the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers He has extensive experience coaching at the High School and collegiate levels.

Coach Johnson has assembled a talented Coaching Staff that includes former major league baseball player Lance Berkman as the hitting coach. Berkman is one of the most successful hitters in Major League Baseball history and he will be an invaluable asset to the Tomball Memorial High School Baseball program.

With a new facility and an experienced and successful coaching staff the future of Tomball Memorial High School Baseball looks bright. The school is poised to continue its tradition of excellence on the diamond for many years to come.
