The 2019 Towson baseball roster is loaded with talent. Get to know the players that will be representing the Tigers this season.

2019 Roster

The 2019 Towson baseball roster is filled with talented players that are ready to make an impact on the diamond. The team is led by senior captain Zachary Chaney, who is coming off of a strong junior season in which he was named to the All-CAA Second Team. Chaney will be joined in the infield by junior All-CAA selection Andrew Owner and sophomores Brendan Butler and Luke weekly. The outfield will feature junior Sean Ward, who was second on the team in batting average last season, along with sophomore Jack intrieri and freshman Matt Goss. Senior Mike Rescigno returns as the team’s primary catcher, while senior right-hander Ryan Tufts will anchor the pitching staff.

New Additions

The 2019 Towson Baseball roster will feature 23 student-athletes, including 13 who are new to the program.

The Tigers will welcome 12 freshman and one transfer to the squad. Of the 12 freshman, seven are pitchers, two are catchers, one is an infielder and two are outfielders. The transfer is a pitcher who will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Returning Players

The 2019 Towson Baseball Roster is filled with experienced and talented players. The team will be looking to build on their success from last season, and they have the pieces in place to do just that. Here’s a look at some of the key returning players:

Pitcher Matt Nash is one of the top returning starters. He had a great 2018 season, posting a 3.86 ERA in 14 starts. Nash will be looked to as the ace of the staff, and he has the talent to anchor the pitching staff.

Infielder Alec Diamond is another key returnee. He was one of the top hitters on the team last season, batting .307 with six homers and 30 RBIs. Diamond will be counted on again to provide a spark at the plate.

Outfielder Alex Weaver is also back for his senior season. Weaver was one of the top Defensive Players on the team last year, and he figures to once again be a key part of the outfield. He also batted .276 with two homers and 19 RBIs last season, so he brings some pop to the lineup as well.

Pitching Staff

The pitching staff is made up of 14 student-athletes, including seven returners from last year. Headlining the staff is senior right-hander Sam Gatz, who was named a preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball News. Gatz was outstanding last season, going 8-2 with a 2.31 ERA in 15 starts. He was named first team All-Conference and led the Tigers in wins, ERA and strikeouts (89).

Infielders

The Towson Tigers Baseball Team is led by Head Coach Matt Tyner. They compete in the NCAA Division I Colonial Athletic Association. The team plays its home games at John B. Schuerholz Park, on the campus of Towson University in Towson, Maryland.

The 2019 season will be Tyner’s fourth as the head coach of the Tigers. Under his leadership, the team has produced a 72–52 overall record and a 35–27 conference record. The Tigers have made one appearance in the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament during his tenure. They lost to Florida State in the Tallahassee Regional final in 2016.

The 2018 Towson Tigers baseball team finished the season with a 30–24 overall record and a 16–10 conference record. They finished second in the CAA regular season standings and won the 2018 CAA Baseball Tournament to earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament In order to win the tournament, they had to defeat top-seeded Northeastern in two straight games. They lost in the Norman Regional final to Oklahoma.

Outfielders

The Towson Baseball Team will have a new look in the outfield this season with the graduation of All-CAA performers Brendan Butler and Colin Conroy. Here is a look at the six players who will compete for time in the three outfield spots.

Redshirt sophomore Jakob Brustoski (.250, 1 RBI in 2018) and junior college transfer Gavin Bailey (11 home runs at Cecil College in 2018) will compete for time in left field Brustoski is a versatile player who can also see time as a designated hitter or pinch hitter.

In center field, Junior College transfer Zachary DesJardins (13 stolen bases at Monroe College in 2018) and sophomore Bryce Ditzel (0-for-2 in 2018) will compete for time. DesJardins is a speedy player who can also play right field. Ditzel is a solid defender with good range.

The most experienced outfielder is senior Chris Henrich (1-for-3, 1 RBI in 2018), who will start the season in right field. Henrich has good power and led the team with four outfield assists last season. Freshman Matthew Vierling could also see time in right field.

Catchers

“The Towson baseball team will have some new faces behind the plate this season.

Redshirt junior Michael Fries is the only returning player who caught last season, appearing in 29 games and making 27 starts. He will be joined by a pair of freshmen — Nick Boyd and Sean Mooney — as well as by Junior College transfer Jake Dittmer.

“I think we’ve got some good young talent and some good arms back there,” said Head Coach Matt Tyner, who is entering his sixth season at Towson. “We’re going to be able to do some things defensively that we couldn’t do last year.”

Fries, who is from Pasadena, Md., hit .259 with two home runs and 10 RBIs last season. He threw out 11 of the 34 runners who attempted to steal against him.”

2019 Schedule

The 2019 Baltimore Orioles season is the 119th season in franchise history, and their 60th as the Orioles. The team will attempt to improve upon their 47-115 record from 2018 under manager Buck Showalter, who enters his final season with the ballclub. They will play their home games at Oriole Park at Camden Yards as members of the American League East.

2018 Results

In 2018, the Towson baseball team finished the season with a 27-27 overall record and a 12-12 conference record. The team qualified for the conference tournament and made it to the semifinals before being eliminated. The team looks to improve upon that performance in 2019 and make a run at the conference title

Coaching Staff

The 2019 Towson Baseball Team will be led by Head coach Matt Tyner, who is entering his second season at the helm. He will be joined by assistant coaches John Szefc and Mike Coss.
