Born and raised in Los Angeles California, Tyra started playing basketball when she was just a kid. She quickly fell in love with the sport and went on to play for her High School team. After graduating, she decided to pursue her passion by enrolling in college on a Basketball Scholarship
Now, Tyra is in her sophomore year at the University of Southern California (USC). She’s a Standout Player on the USC Trojans women’s basketball team and she’s already helped them win two conference championships With her hard work and talent, there’s no doubt that Tyra will continue to achieve big things in the world of basketball.
Tyra Hunt’s Basketball Career
Tyra Hunt is a professional basketball player who has had an impressive career. She was first drafted by the Seattle Storm in 2003 and played with the team for two years. She was then traded to the Phoenix Mercury in 2005 and helped lead the team to a NBA Championship in 2007. After spending a few years with the Los Angeles Sparks, she was traded to the Chicago Sky in 2012. Tyra has been selected to play in the WNBA All-Star game four times and was named the league’s Most Improved Player in 2010.

We caught up with Tyra to chat about her life outside of basketball, her future plans, and what advice she has for aspiring athletes.
Tyra Hunt’s Family
Tyra Hunt was born on October 20, 1995, in Indianapolis, Indiana to parents Steven and Tammi Hunt. She has two older sisters, Samantha and Courtney. Tyra’s father played basketball for Marian University from 1991-1995 and her grandfather, Roger, played at Butler University from 1963-1966. Jumping genes clearly run in the family!
From a young age, Tyra had a natural talent and love for basketball. In high school she led her team to two State Championships and was awarded Ms. Basketball of Indiana in 2013. In college, Tyra played for Duke University where she set the school’s all-time Three-point shooting record. She graduated from Duke in 2017 with a degree in Sociology.
Throughout her career, Tyra has received many awards and accolades. In 2018, she was named the NBA Rookie of the Year and won a gold medal as part of the USA Basketball team at the FIBA World Cup Most recently, she was voted an All-Star starter for the 2020 NBA season
At just 25 years old, Tyra Hunt is already one of the most accomplished athletes in her field. She is a role model to young girls everywhere and we can’t wait to see what she does next!
