Introducing the 2019 UC Davis Baseball Roster

The 2019 UC Davis baseball roster is loaded with talent and promises to be one of the most competitive teams in recent memory. head coach Matt Vaughn has assembled a group of young men who are committed to working hard and representing their school with class and dignity.

The pitching staff is anchored by senior ace Kyle Slowey, who was recently named a preseason All-American by perfect game Slowey is joined by a trio of talented junior arms in Drew Stadtler, Connor Hoesen, and Ryan Hooper. The Aggies also have a deep and experienced bullpen, led by closer Cameron Ragsdale.

The offensively, the Aggies are led by senior first baseman Miles Silverstein, who was named a preseason All-American by Baseball America Silverstein is joined in the middle of the lineup by junior third baseman Ryan Cavan and sophomore second baseman DaDiamond Lewis. The Aggies also have speed and power at the top of the lineup in leadoff hitter Braden Scamozzi and center fielder Jamie Jarmon.

The 2019 UC Davis baseball team has all the ingredients necessary to have a special season. Be sure to follow their progress all year long!

Starting Pitchers

The UC Davis baseball team has five starting pitchers on its roster for the 2019 season.

Cole Irvin is a senior from Yorba Linda California. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the fifth round of the 2016 MLB Draft In his three seasons at UC Davis, he has a 20-8 record and a 2.57 ERA. He was named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2018.

Ryan Curl is a junior from Fresno, California. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the seventh round of the 2018 MLB draft In his two seasons at UC Davis, he has a 7-2 record and a 4.41 ERA.

EthanORED Landers is a junior from Reno, Nevada. He transferred to UC Davis from Sierra College prior to the 2018 season. In his two seasons at UC Davis, he has a 9-5 record and a 3.62 ERA.

Bryce Jarvis is a sophomore from San Juan Capistrano, California. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 34th round of the 2018 MLB Draft but did not sign with them and instead attended UC Davis. In his one season at UC Davis, he has an 8-3 record and a 3.35 ERA

Tommy Costello is a freshman from San Rafael, California. He was not drafted out of High School but chose to attend UC Davis instead. In his one season at UC Davis, he has a 5-4 record and 4.58 ERA

Catchers

The UC Davis Baseball Team has five catchers on its roster for the 2019 season.

Sophomore Bradley Schaefer returns as the team’s primary catcher after starting 28 games behind the plate last season. He batted .237 with one home run and nine RBIs in 2018.

Freshman Collin Bennett will also be seeing time behind the plate after impressing the Coaching Staff in fall practices. Bennett is a transfer from Yavapai College where he played two seasons. He was a 2018 NJCAA Division I All-American and was named conference Defensive Player of the Year.

Juniors Cameron Briggs and Nick Lynch will provide depth at catcher, while freshman Clay Owens will redshirt this season.

Infielders

The infielders of the UC Davis Baseball team play an important role in the game. They are responsible for fielding the ball and getting the outs. The infielders must be quick and have good hand-eye coordination

Designated Hitters

The designated hitter is a position in baseball that is reserved for the player who bats instead of the pitcher. In the National League only pitchers can bat, so the designated hitter is not used. In the American League however, each team can have a designated hitter swing away for their pitcher.

Several UC Davis baseball players have been very successful as designated hitters, and they have played a vital role in the team’s success. Here are some of the most notable UC Davis designated hitters:

-Trevor Anderson: Trevor was UC Davis’ primary Designated Hitter during the 2017 season. He batted .330 with 4 home runs and 33 RBIs.

-Ryan Golubiewski: Ryan was UC Davis’ primary designated hitter during the 2016 season. He batted .345 with 10 home runs and 50 RBIs.

-Matt Blas: Matt was UC Davis’ primary designated hitter during the 2015 season. He batted .320 with 2 home runs and 22 RBIs.

Utility Players

Utility players are those who can play multiple positions on the field. They typically don’t specialize in any one position, but are versatile and can fill in wherever needed. On a Baseball roster utility players are a valuable asset because they offer depth and flexibility.

The utility player position is not an easy one to fill. Players who can successfully play multiple positions are rare. It takes a special kind of athlete to be able to play many different positions at a high level.

Not only do utility players have to be physically gifted, they also have to be mentally tough. They have to be able to adjust on the fly and be ready to play wherever they’re needed. Utility players must also be able to handle the pressure of knows that they might be called upon at any moment.

If you’re looking for a utility player for your Baseball Team you want someone who is versatile, physically gifted, and mentally tough. Someone who can handle the pressure of knowing they might have to step in at any moment and deliver. That’s not an easy find, but when you do, you’ve got yourself a valuable asset.

2019 Season Outlook

The UC Davis baseball team is looking to build on their 2018 season in which they posted a 27-23 record. The team will have to replace some key contributors from last year’s squad, but they return a core group of experienced players. The pitching staff will be led by senior right-hander Alex Schaaf, who was named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year last season. The Aggies will also have experience in the outfield with seniors Braden Martinson and Alec Smith returning. The team will open their 2019 season on February 15th with a three-game series against Pepperdine.
