In 1924, the Wisconsin Hockey Club became a varsity sport and joined the Midwest Collegiate Hockey League (MCHL). The Badgers won their first conference championship in 1925. They would go on to win fourteen more MCHL titles over the next thirty years.

It would be another seven years before they made it back to the Final Four, but when they did they made it count. In 1990, led by future NHL stars Chris Chelios and Tony Amonte, Wisconsin won their second NCAA National Championship with a 6-5 victory over Colgate in triple overtime.
Since then, the Badgers have been one of college hockey’s most successful programs. They’ve made it back to the NCAA Tournament twenty-nine times and have reached the Frozen Four eleven times since 1990. They’ve also won eight WCHA championships since joining the conference in 1951. In 2018, they finally captured their first National Championship since 1990 by defeating Ohio State 3-0 in St Paul Minnesota
