10.The 2020 Season in Review
It was a season like no other. A global pandemic forced the cancellation of Minor League Baseball and left Major League clubs scrambling to piece together a schedule on short notice. The Wake Forest Baseball Team was one of the many college programs affected, as the Demon Deacons were unable to play their originally scheduled 56-game slate.
Fortunately, Wake Forest was able to salvage a 24-game season by joining forces with Duke, Clemson, Georgia Tech and Notre Dame to form the Atlantic Coast baseball conference (ACBC). The Deacons went 13-11 in conference play and finished the year with a 26-27 overall record.
Wake Forest got off to a hot start, winning eight of its first nine games. The Deacons then hit a rough patch, losing 14 of their next 17 contests. However, they recovered to win seven of their final 10 games and finish the season on a high note.
Several Demon Deacons had standout campaigns in 2020. First baseman Chris Lanzilli was named ACC Player of the Year after hitting .349 with 10 home runs and 35 RBIs. Outfielder Bobby Seymour was also honored by the conference, earning ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors for his work in center field. Other top performers for Wake Forest included pitcher Jared Shuster (5-3, 2.75 ERA) and closer Parker Meadows (5-2, 3.38 ERA, 7 saves).
