Today, the team is coached by Mike Brey and plays its home games at Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center on the university’s campus in South Bend Indiana.

As of the 2019-20 season the Notre Dame men’s basketball team has an all-time record of 1,853-1,063 (.635). The team has made 26 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament appearances, with a record of 19-26 (.422). They were National Invitation Tournament champions in 1945 and runners-up in 1968 and 2009.
Team history
Notre Dame basketball had humble beginnings, starting out as an intramural sport in 1897. In 1904, the program gained varsity status, and in 1913 they became a member of the Big East Conference In 1918, Notre Dame won their first conference championship
Notre Dame has experienced success throughout their history. They have appeared in 43 NCAA tournaments, including 5 Final Fours and 2 National Championship games. In 1978, Notre Dame was led by Future Hall of-Famer Digger Phelps to their first ever National Championship appearance. In 2015, Notre Dame made it back to the National Championship game led by star player Jerian Grant. Although they lost in the Championship game this season is considered one of the best in school history.
The Fighting Irish have had many Great players over the years, such as Luke Harangody, Tim Abromaitis, David Rivers, and Troy Murphy The current team is looking to make noise in the NCAA tournament led by senior point guard Matt Farrell and junior wing Bonzie Colson.

Notre Dame has a long tradition of basketball rivalries. Some of their most heated matches are against teams like the University of Connecticut the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky
