Criticism of Roger Goodell
One of the most powerful people in the National Football League is Roger Goodell, the NFL Commissioner. He has been heavily criticized in recent years for his handling of various off-field issues involving NFL players.
Handling of player discipline
Goodell has been roundly criticized for his handling of player discipline, most notably in the cases of Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, and Tom Brady. In the Rice case, Goodell initially suspended the Baltimore Ravens running back for two games after he was charged with assaulting his then-fiancĂ©e in an elevator. After video of the assault surfaced, Goodell increased Rice’s suspension to an indefinite ban. Goodell admitted he “got it wrong” with the original suspension and said he would have handled the matter differently if he had seen the video. In 2015, a federal judge overturned Rice’s indefinite suspension, ruling that Goodell had acted arbitrarily and had failed to adequately notify Rice of the reason for his increased punishment.
In Peterson’s case, the Minnesota Vikings running back was indicted on child abuse charges in September 2014. Peterson pleaded no contest to a lesser charge of reckless assault in November 2014 and was suspended by the NFL for the rest of the season. In December 2014, following an appeal by Peterson, an independent arbitrator reduced his suspension to six games.
Goodell’s handling of Brady’s involvement in the Deflategate scandal was also criticized. In May 2015, following an investigation by Ted Wells, it was determined that Brady was “at least generally aware” that New England Patriots staff members were deflating footballs below the league-mandated threshold. Goodell suspended Brady for four games and fined him $1 million; Brady appealed his suspension, which was ultimately upheld by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in July 2016.
Lack of transparency
Goodell has been criticized for a lack of transparency. In a 2014 letter to NFL owners, he said: “We need to do better. I acknowledge that fully.” He has been criticized for not being available to the media. In 2015, he did not hold a press conference during the NFL Draft. After Ray Rice was suspended indefinitely in 2014, Goodell held a press conference, but he did take questions from reporters.
In 2016, Goodell was criticized for his handling of the Deflategate scandal. He was accused of being too lenient on Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
Goodell has also been criticized for his handling of player discipline. In 2017, he suspended Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott for six games after he was accused of domestic violence. Many people thought the suspension was too harsh and that Goodell was unfairly punishing Elliott.
Goodell’s legacy
Roger Goodell took over as NFL Commissioner in 2006, succeeding Paul Tagliabue. Goodell had big shoes to fill, and he has done an admirable job. He has increased revenue, improved the quality of play, and made the game safer. However, his tenure has not been without controversies.
Impact on the NFL
Goodell was appointed commissioner in 2006, taking over from Paul Tagliabue. Under Goodell, the NFL has seen unprecedented growth in popularity. He has helped make the NFL the most successful sports league in the world.
Goodell has also been a controversial figure, with some believing he is too lenient on players accused of domestic violence and other crimes. He has also been criticized for his handling of concussions and player safety. Despite these criticisms, Goodell remains one of the most powerful and influential people in sports.
