The 2008 NBA Finals were the National Basketball Association (NBA)’s Championship Series for the 2007–08 season. The best-of-seven playoff was contested between the Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics and the Western Conference champion Los Angeles Lakers This was the first title for the Celtics since 1986 and 17th overall; it also made them only the third franchise to win a championship while posting a sub-.500 road record in Playoff History after 1955–56 Milwaukee Hawks and 1974–75 Golden State Warriors The Lakers appeared in the Finals for the first time since 2004, having defeated defending champions San Antonio Spurs 4–0 in the Western Conference Finals. This was also Kobe Bryant’s first Finals appearance without Shaquille O’Neal.
The series was played under several circumstances that were later described as a “perfect storm.” The Spurs were also considered strong contenders to repeat as champions, but they were eliminated by the Lakers in five games during the Western Conference Finals In addition, several other teams that might have competed for an NBA title—the Mavericks, Suns and Warriors—were all defeated during their playoff runs.
The Celtics then swept the Pistons 4–0 en route to their first ever Finals berth with Head Coach Doc Rivers at the helm. The team was led by All-Stars Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen as well as Pierce who finished 3rd in MVP voting that year; Rajon Rondo James Posey and rookie Glen Davis were all significant players coming off of their bench. On June 7, 2008, with their fourth consecutive victory just days earlier over archrival Detroit Pistons—”Bad Boys” era—the 2008 Boston Celtics became World Champions by defeating archrival Los Angeles Lakers 131–92 in Game 6 of the NBA Finals at Staples Center in Los Angeles winning its first championship of this millenium and seventeenth overall dating back to 1957 (along with 8 straight wins dating back to Game 5 of Eastern Conference Semifinals against Cleveland Cavaliers which closed out its original “Big Three” era). With this victory, they managed to avoid becoming only the second team after San Francisco Warriors (in 1975) to lose an NBA Finals series after holding a commanding 3–1 lead – making history instead by rallying from a 24-point deficit to win game four 97–91 – en route to becoming only fourth team overall (out of 32) ever ‘blown out’ at home in game one of an NBA Finals series before rallying back to win it all; also giving head coach Doc Rivers his first ever title in his first appearance – something no other Head Coach has done since 1948 when Red Auerbach accomplished this very feat with original “Celtics dynasty” which featured fellow Hall of Famers Bob Cousy and Bill Russell [2][3][4] With their seventeen championships (behind only two other teams), they are now currently tied with long-time rivals Los Angeles Lakers for second place on the all-time list trailing only their other old rivals – cross-town Philadelphia 76ers who have won 3 more titles for a grand total of 20 championships.
