The History of Winter Haven Baseball

The history of Winter Haven baseball dates back to the 19th century, when the game was first played in the city. Since then, the sport has been a part of the city’s culture and has been enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

Winter Haven has been home to several professional baseball teams over the years, including the Winter Haven Yankees, which played in the Florida State League from 1914 to1916. The team was disbanded after World War I, but was resurrected in 1919 as the Winter Haven Senators. The Senators played in the Florida East Coast League from 1919 to 1928, and again from 1936 to 1942. The team was dissolved once again after World War II.

In 1946, a group of local business leaders decided to bring professional baseball back to Winter Haven. They organized a team called the Winter Haven Pilots, which began play in 1947. The Pilots were a part of the Florida National League and played their home games at Denison Stadium. The team only lasted one season, however, as it folded due to financial problems.

In 1966, another group of local businessmen revived Professional Baseball in Winter Haven with the formation of the Winter Haven Sun Sox. The Sun Sox were a part of the Southern League, and played their home games atChain O’Lakes Park. The team only lasted two seasons before moving to Memphis, Tennessee.

From 1970 to 1972, Winter Haven was home to a team called theWinter Haven Orphans. The Orphans were a part of the Florida State League, and played their home games at Chain O’Lakes Park. The team folded after three seasons due to financial difficulties.

In 1973, professional baseball returned to Winter Haven with the formation ofthe Winter Haven Red Sox The Red Sox were affiliated with Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox and began play as a member ofthe Class A-Advanced Carolina League . The team played its home games atChain O’Lakes Park until it moved into a new ballpark known asLegion Field in 1997 . In 2008 , however , Legion Field was demolished and replaced with a new ballpark , which is now known aspublix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium . Today , Joker Marchant Stadium is still home tothe Red Sox , who now compete as a member ofthe Class A South Atlantic League .
