WVU baseball The Basics

Wvu Baseball is a Division I college baseball program that competes in the Big 12 Conference. The team is based in Morgantown, West Virginia and plays its home games at Monongalia County Ballpark.

WVU began competing in baseball in 1892, and has been a member of the Big 12 Conference since 2013. The Mountaineers have reached the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament 11 times, most recently in 2019. They have won two conference championships in 1929 (as members of the Southern Conference) and 1955 (as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference).

The Mountaineers are coached by Randy Mazey, who is entering his seventh season with the team in 2020. Mazey has led WVU to two NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the College World Series in 2018.

The 2020 Wvu Baseball team is scheduled to begin its season on February 14, 2020, with a three-game series against VMI.

This is what you need to know about your WVU Mountaineers baseball team

WVU finished the 2018 season with a 35-24 record, their most wins in a season since 2014. They qualified for the NCAA Tournament ultimately falling to Texas Tech in the Lubbock Regional

The Mountaineers are led by Head Coach Randy Mazey, who enters his sixth season at the helm. WVU has had four consecutive winning seasons under Mazey, and he has been named Big 12 Coach of the Year twice.

The team is anchored by senior second baseman Kyle Gray, who was named First Team All-Big 12 last season. Gray is a career .306 hitter and has 98 RBIs in his time at WVU. Also returning is junior right fielder Darius Hill, who was Second Team All-Big 12 in 2018 after hitting .291 with 10 home runs and 52 RBIs.

On the mound, WVU will be led by senior right-hander Michael Grove, who was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week three times last season en route to First Team All-Big 12 honors. Grove went 8-3 with a 2.87 ERA last season and struck out 114 batters in 93 innings pitched He will be joined in the rotation by junior righty Alek Manoah, who was Second Team All-Big 12 last year after going 7-4 with a 3.60 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 92 innings pitched.

WVU Baseball The Venue

Wvu Baseball will be playing their home games at Monongalia County Ballpark. The ballpark is located at University Town Centre near Morganstown, West Virginia The state-of-the-art facility opened in April of 2015 and has a capacity of 4,000.

WVU Baseball: The Fans

The Mountaineers have some of the most passionate and dedicated fans in all of college baseball West Virginia University baseball fans are known for their creative and spirited game day activities. Some of the most popular traditions include:

-The WVU Baseball Hype Video: Before every Home game the WVU Baseball Team runs out of the locker room to the tune of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” while highlights from previous games play on the video board.

-The seventh inning Stretch: During the seventh inning stretch, Mountaineer fans stand up and sing John Denver’s “Country Roads ”

-The Wave: Fans do “the wave” around the stadium during every home game.

In order to follow WVU baseball, you need to understand how the team is covered in the media. The website WVUBaseball.com is the primary source for all news related to Mountaineer baseball, but following the team on social media is also a great way to stay up-to-date. The team has official accounts on Twitter (@WVUBaseball) and Facebook (West Virginia University Baseball), and these are updated regularly with game results, announcements, and other news. In addition, many members of the team and Coaching Staff are active on Twitter, so following them is a great way to get insights into what’s going on with the team.

The Mountaineers also have a dedicated radio show, “WVU Baseball Live”, which airs on Tuesday nights from 6:00-7:00 pm ET on 620 AM/102.3 FM in Morgantown. The show is hosted by play-by-play announcer Tony Caridi and former Mountaineer pitchers Nate Bump and Darin Gorski. It’s a great way to catch up on all the latest news and information about the team, and you can listen live or check out podcasts of previous episodes on WVUBaseball.com.

In addition to following the team online, attending games in person is a great way to support Mountaineer baseball. WVU home games are played at Monongalia County Ballpark, located just off campus in Morgantown. Tickets are affordable and the atmosphere at the ballpark is electric, so it’s definitely an experience you don’t want to miss!

In addition, WVU has made nine appearances in the NCAA tournament with their most recent coming in 2016.

WVU Baseball: The Rivalries

WVU baseball teams have a few rivals, most notably Marshall, Pittsburgh, and West Virginia State.

Marshall and WVU have been bitter rivals since their first game in 1913. The two schools are only separated by about 90 miles, which makes for a heated competition. The two teams have played each other nearly 200 times, with WVU leading the series 120-74.

The Pitt-WVU rivalry is also a long-standing one. These two teams first met on the diamond in 1901 and have played each other nearly 200 times. Pitt currently leads the series 107-88.

WVU also has a strong rivalry with West Virginia State. The two schools have been playing each other since 1895 and have played each other over 170 times. WVU leads the series 107-51-12.
