The best baseball teams of all time

In baseball, more than any other sport, history matters. The game is littered with quaint traditions and an almost fetishistic reverence for its past. So it should come as no surprise that one of the most popular topics among baseball fans is debating who are the best teams of all time.

There are a number of ways to approach this question. One could simply look at World Series titles, but that would be far too easy and would completely ignore the majority of baseball history as there have only been 108 World Series winners in the sport’s 141-year existence. Instead, we’re going to focus on regular-season dominance.

We’ll start by looking at each team’s winning percentage over the course of its existence. This obviously favors newer teams and penalizes those who played in the pre-Expansion Era when there were far fewer teams, but it’s still a good place to start. From there, we’ll adjust for Strength of Schedule and era using Bill James’ excellent “secret sauce” formula, which weights recent seasons more heavily than older ones and adjusts for changes in the overall level of play throughout history. Finally, we’ll add a factor for postseason success to try to balance out the fact that some of the best teams ever have never won a World Series
