Emmanuel College Basketball: A History of Success

Early Successes
The Emmanuel College basketball team has a long history of success, dating back to the early years of the program. In the 1950s, the team made several appearances in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament including a trip to the Sweet Sixteen in 1957. The 1960s and 1970s saw more success for the team, as they made several trips to the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament In 1975, the team won the Division II National Championship The 1980s and 1990s were a down period for the team, but they rebounded in the early 2000s with a trip to the Division II Elite Eight in 2002. The team has continued to be successful in recent years making trips to the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament in 2014 and 2015.
The Golden Age
The 1990s were a golden age for Emmanuel college basketball The team won four consecutive conference championships from 1991 to 1994, and made five straight appearances in the NCAA Division III tournament. Head Coach Dave Ginsberg led the team to new heights, and Emmanuel became a national power in small college basketball
Players like Jeff Hernberg and Jay Doty became household names, and the Emmanuel College Basketball program was cemented as one of the best in the country. The team’s success continued into the new millennium, as they made another appearance in the NCAA tournament in 2000.
In recent years the team has undergone some rebuilding, but with Coach Ginsberg still at the helm, Emmanuel remains one of the top small College Basketball programs in the nation.
The Dark Ages
The EC Basketball Program hit a snag in the late 1990s and early 2000s, coinciding with the school’s transition from Division II to Division III athletics. The team had a losing record in six of seven seasons from 1997-2003. Things began to look up in the 2003-2004 season, when the team finished with a winning record of 17-10. The following season, they finished 21-7 and made it to the conference semifinals.
The Resurgence
Since the 2015-2016 season, the Emmanuel College men’s Basketball team has enjoyed a resurgence in success. After years of struggling to compete at the Division III level, the team has put together a string of winning seasons, culminating in an appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2019.
Led by head coach Kevin James, the team has developed a reputation for play tough defense and making the most of its limited offensive possessions. The result has been a string of close, hard-fought games that have ended in victory more often than not.
With a core group of players that includes All-American guard Marcus Williams and defensive stalwart Michael Boyd, the Emmanuel College basketball team looks poised to continue its run of success in the years to come.

With 4 NCAA Division III National Championships in the past 5 years, Emmanuel College has cemented itself as one of the premier college basketball programs in the country, regardless of division.
The early years of the program were marked by modest success, as the team struggled to find its footing against its more established opponents. However, under Head Coach Sean Creagh, who took over in 2009, the team quickly turned things around. In his first season at the helm, Coach Creagh led the team to its first conference championship in 10 years.
Since then, it has been nothing but success for Emmanuel college basketball In addition to their 4 national championships, they have also won 8 conference championships and made 14 appearances in the NCAA Division III tournament. They have produced numerous All-Americans and have had several players go on to play professionally.
Under Coach Creagh’s leadership, Emmanuel College has cemented itself as one of the top college basketball programs in America. With their impressive string of successes over the past decade, they have established themselves as a true dynasty.
The Future

The team is currently coached by Tony Johnson, who has led the team to two conference championships in his tenure.
