The program is led by Head Coach Jim Wooldridge, who has been at CSUSB since 2009. Wooldridge has a career record of 612-299, and his teams have averaged 21 wins per season at CSUSB. He has been named Conference Coach of the Year three times and was named the National Coach of the Year in 2014.

CSUSB first fielded a men’s Basketball team in 1963, and the program quickly found success under head coach Jim Wooldridge. In just their second season, the team won the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) tournament and earned a bid to the 1964 NCAA Division II tournament. The team would go on to make five more appearances in the NCAA Division II tournament over the next decade, including a run to the Elite Eight in 1972.
The early success of the program helped put CSUSB on the map, and in 1977, the school made the jump to Division I. The transition was not an easy one, as the team struggled to compete against some of the nation’s top programs However, Wooldridge was able to lead the team to a winning record in 1980-81, culminating in an appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).
Since then, CSUSB has made steady progress, becoming a regular contributor to Conference Standings and postseason tournaments In 1998-99, under Head Coach Bob Williams, The team won 27 games and made it all the way to the Elite Eight of NCAA Division II before falling to eventual National Champion Florida Southern. Williams would go on to lead CSUSB to four more NCAA Division II tournament appearances before making The school’s first-ever appearance in NCAA Division I tournament in 2008. After winning just nine games in his first season at CSUSB, Williams had led his team on an incredible turnaround that coincided with The move up to Division I.
