Magic Johnson
Magic Johnson is a retired American Professional Basketball player who played point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) for 13 seasons. After winning championships in high school and college, Johnson was selected first overall in the 1979 NBA draft by the Lakers. He won a championship and an NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award in his rookie season, and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player three times in his career. Johnson retired abruptly in 1991 after announcing that he had contracted HIV, but returned to play in the 1992 All-Star game winning MVP honors. He went on to win championships with the Lakers in 2000 and 2001.
Johnson’s career achievements include three NBA MVP Awards, nine NBA Finals appearances, twelve All-Star games, and ten All-NBA First and Second Team nominations. He led the league in regular-season assists four times, and is the NBA’s all-time leader in average assists per game at 11.2. Johnson was a member of 1992 United States men’s Olympic gold medal basketball team (“The Dream Team”), which defeated Croatia to win the Olympic title. After leaving the Lakers in 1991 as their franchise player, Johnson formed a powerhouse Big Three with fellow Hall of Famers Karl Malone and John Stockton on the Utah Jazz from 1996 to 1998.
In 1996, Johnson was honored as one of 55 greatest players in NBA history He was inducted into both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (in 2002) and the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player Hall of Fame (in 2006). He was rated #13 by ESPN on their Top Players list for all time as well as #4 on their list for point guards during their Ultimate 100 broadcast which aired on April 15th 2008.
