Westphal left after the 2006 season to take over at Southern California but his successor, Ernie Kent, kept up the winning tradition In his first season at Pepperdine, Kent led the Waves back to the NCAA tournament they would make three more appearances under his watch before he was let go in 2012.

Since then, Pepperdine has struggled to find success on the court. The team has not made an NCAA appearance since 2011 and has failed to win more than 15 games in a season since 2013-14. He inherits a Pepperdine team that went 8-22 last season and has not made an NCAA tournament appearance since 2002.
