The Crusaders were one of the most successful high school basketball teams of their time. They won the state championship in 1909 and again in 1910. They also reached the semifinals of the State Tournament in 1911 and 1912. The team’s success led to it being featured in newspapers across the country, including The New York Times
The team was coached by Harry Tuthill, who also coached baseball and football at Saint Petersburg high school Tuthill coached the Crusaders from 1902 to 1915, when he left to take a coaching position at Vanderbilt University
The Crusaders continued to be successful after Tuthill’s departure, winning State Championships in 1916 and 1917 under new coach Clarence Watkins. The team’s success led to it being featured in newspapers across the country, including The New York Times.
Saint Petersburg high school closed in 1971 as part of desegregation, but the Basketball Program lives on through Saint Petersburg College’s men’s Basketball team which is nicknamed “the Shu.”
