The PIAA’s new playoff format
The PIAA has changed its playoff format for baseball this season in an effort to ensure more competitive games and avoid first-round blowouts.
In the past, the state’s Baseball Playoffs were divided into two classes: A and AA. But this season, the PIAA has split Class A into two divisions: East and West. The top four seeds in each division will earn a spot in the quarterfinals.
This change was made in response to concerns that some teams were not being challenged enough in the early rounds of the playoffs, leading to lopsided scores and lack of competitiveness.
The new format should provide more evenly matched games and lead to a more exciting state tournament

The darkhorse in each class
As the Piaa Baseball playoffs kick off this week, fans are eager to see which team will hoist the state championship trophy come June.
There are always a few dark horses in each class that could make a run at the title and this year is no different. In Class A, Upper Dauphin is looking to make noise after finishing the regular season with an 18-2 record. The Trojans will take on Millville in the first round of the playoffs.
In Class AA, Westmont Hilltop is looking to make a run after finishing the season with a 16-4 record. The Hilltoppers will take on West Perry in the first round of the playoffs.
In Class AAA, Montoursville is looking to make some noise after finishing the season with a 14-6 record. The Warriors will take on Tunkhannock in the first round of the playoffs.
The sleeper team in each class
As the baseball playoffs start this week, many teams have been preparing for their chance to win a state title. Heading into the playoffs, every team has a chance to win it all, but there are always a few teams that fly under the radar and end up surprising everyone. Here is a look at the sleeper team in each class:
Class A: Phillipsburg-Osceola
Phillipsburg-Osceola may not be the biggest school in Class A, but they have proved time and time again that they can play with the best of them. The Mounties have a strong pitching staff that has only given up more than 3 runs in a game twice all season. If they can get hot at the plate, they could make a deep run in the playoffs.
Class AA: Burrell
Burrell is another team that may not be the biggest or most talented, but they always find a way to win. The Buccaneers aren’t going to blow anyone away with their offense, but their pitching staff has been solid all season. If they can scratch out some runs, they could make some noise in the playoffs.
Class AAA: North Allegheny
North Allegheny is always one of the favorites in Class AAA, but they seem to fly under the radar every year. The Tigers have one of the best pitchers in the state in Max Kranick, and their offense is good enough to put up some runs. If everything comes together, they could be hoisting a State Championship at the end of the year.
The must-see first-round games
It’s that time of year again — the PIAA baseball playoffs are here! The 2021 playoffs will be especially exciting, with many great match-ups in the first round. Here are some of the must-see games
Middletown vs. Lancaster Catholic: This game features two of the top teams in District 3. Middletown is the defending district champion, and Lancaster Catholic is one of the most successful programs in the state. This should be a great game between two evenly-matched teams.
Spring-Ford vs. Downingtown East: These two teams met in the district semifinals last year, with Spring-Ford coming out on top. Downingtown East will be looking for revenge in this matchup, but Spring-Ford is once again one of the Top Teams in District 1. This should be a great game between two talented squads.
Trinity vs. Berks Catholic: These two teams met earlier this season, with Trinity coming out on top 5-4. Berks Catholic will be looking for revenge in this matchup, but Trinity has been one of the best teams in District 3 all season long This should be another great game between two evenly-matched opponents.
