The Pitching Matchup: Brown vs. Wichita State’s Ace

The Game-Winning RBI: A Closer Look
The game-winning RBI is one of the most coveted statlines in baseball. It’s the hit, or the sacrifice fly, or the bases-loaded walk that plate the go-ahead run in the late innings and send a team to victory. But what does it really take to rack up a game-winning RBI?
First, let’s look at some numbers. In all of baseball history there have been nearly 30,000 game-winning RBIs recorded. Of those, about two-thirds have been hits, and one-third have been walks or sacrifice flies. home runs make up a small but not insignificant percentage as well — just under 4%.
So what separates the greats from the rest? For one thing, it helps to be on a winning team The New York Yankees have had more than 1,300 game-winning RBIs in their history; the Pittsburgh Pirates less than half that. But even among winning teams, some players stand out. Nationals second baseman Brian Dozier has had 14 game-winning RBIs since 2016; no other National has had more than eight in that span.
But being on a winning team is only part of the equation. The Yankees may have had more game-winning RBIs than any other team, but they also have had more opportunities — their batters have come to the plate in more late-and-close situations than any other team over the last three years. When you adjust for opportunities, players like Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado and Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo start to rise to the top of the leaderboards.
So what does it take to be a player who racks up game-winning RBIs? It helps to be on a good team, but it also helps to be someone who comes through in the clutch when your team needs you most.
