Professional career

Pittsburgh Pirates (1998–2003)
prince became known for his adept handling of young pitchers during his six seasons (1998–2003) with the Pittsburgh Pirates which included starts by Kris Benson, Jimmy Anderson and Joe Beimel among others. Benson credits prince for helping him develop into a successful Major League pitcher. While serving as Benson’s catcher in 1999, prince helped him pitch to a 12-12 record despite only having pitched in 14 minor league games prior to that season. As Beimel recalls: “I had next to no experience above A ball when I got to Pittsburgh [in 2001], but Tom made me feel like I belonged.”
In addition to his work with young pitchers, prince was also praised by then-Pirates General Manager Dave Littlefield for his handling of veteran pitchers Éric Gagné and Al Leiter while they were with the team late in their careers. Leiter called prince “a great sounding board,” while Gagné said that catching prince was like “having another pitching coach on the field.”

Managerial career
On October 3, 2005, after Lloyd McClendon was fired following the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 67-95 season, prince was named interim manager of the team for the final 12 games of the season. The Pirates went 4-8 during that stretch.

Coaching career (2006–present)

After managing in minor league baseball for one season each with Single-A Hickory Crawdads and Double-A Altoona Curve , respectively , price became bullpen coach for Triple-A Indianapolis Indians from 2009 through 2011 . In 2012 , Price moved up to Big League bullpen coach position with Indians .

price then became first base coach on Arizona Diamondbacks ‘ staff on November 16 , 2013 under then newly appointed manager Kirk Gibson .
