The History of Notre Dame Hockey
The history of Notre Dame hockey is a long and storied one, dating back to 1896 when the school’s first ice Hockey Team was formed. Since then, the Fighting Irish have amassed an impressive record of success on the ice, winning 25 national championships and producing 49 All-American players Notre Dame is also home to the largest collegiate hockey arena in the United States the historic Compton Family Ice Arena.
Notre Dame’s first foray into intercollegiate competition came in 1896 when a group of students formed an Ice Hockey team and challenged Michigan to a game. The game took place on February 17th, 1897 and ended in a 6-1 victory for Michigan. Nevertheless, Notre Dame was hooked on hockey and would go on to play Michigan again the following year, this time coming out on top with a 2-1 victory.
The early years of Notre Dame Hockey were marked by struggles both on and off the ice. The program was nearly shut down due to financial difficulties on several occasions, but each time it was saved by generous donations from alumni and fans. On the ice, the Irish were often outmatched by their opponents and did not taste victory again until 1903 when they defeated Michigan once more, this time by a score of 3-2.
Despite these difficulties, Notre Dame persevered and slowly began to build a successful hockey program In 1908, the school won its first National Championship and soon became one of the most dominant teams in collegiate hockey. Throughout the early 20th century, Notre Dame won several more national titles and produced many All-American players
In 1968, Notre Dame made history when it became the first university to build an indoor arena specifically for hockey. The rink was named after long-time Head Coach Clarence “Lefty” Smith and has since been renamed Compton Family Ice Arena in honor of former head coach Jeff Jackson and his family.
Compton Family Ice Arena has served as home to some of the most memorable moments in Notre Dame Hockey history. In 2010, the Irish defeated rival Boston College in front of a record-setting crowd of 5752 fans to win their 25th National Championship More recently, in 2014 Compton Family Ice Arena hosted its first ever Hockey East Playoff Game as Notre Dame defeated New Hampshire 2-1 in overtime.
There is no doubt that Notre Dame has become one of college hockey’s powerhouse programs over the years. With 25 national championships and 49 All-American players to its credit, Notre Dame has cemented its place among collegiate hockey’s elite schools.
