The Professional Years

When Ames moved to the 4A classification in 1975, they joined forces with neighboring district rivals Boone and Marshalltown to form the Little Hawkeye Conference. The conference realignment meant that for the first time in school history, Ames would regularly compete against some of the state’s largest schools. Led by future Iowa State Head Coach Johnny Orr, the Little Cyclones made an immediate splash on the State basketball scene. In just their second year in the conference, Ames finished the regular season with a perfect 14-0 record to win the conference title outright. They would go on to win back-to-back conference crowns in 1976 and 1977. In 1977, they also made their first appearance in the State Tournament since 1957, losing in the semifinals to eventual state champion Waterloo East.

Orr would lead Ames to two more conference titles in his final two years at the helm of the program before leaving to take over at Iowa State in 1980. Orr’s replacement was Gene Pulling, who would guide Ames to a fourth-place finish at the state tournament in his first season. The Little Cyclones would make three more trips to the state tournament under Pulling, but would never again advance past the semifinals. Pulling left Ames after the 1983-84 season to become head coach at Drake University.

In 1985, Bob Wilbur was hired as Ames’ new Head Coach In his first season, Wilbur led Ames back to the state tournament for the first time since 1984. The Little Cyclones would make three more trips to Des Moines under Wilbur, but were never able to get over the hump and reach the Championship game After a disappointing 12-11 campaign in 1988-89, Wilbur resigned as Ames’ Head coach He was replaced by Curt Petrowiak, who would spend just one season at Ames before moving on to take over at Ankeny high school

Randy Gatewood was hired as Petrowiak’s replacement prior to the start of the 1989-90 season. In his first year at Ames, Gatewood led the Little Cyclones back to the state tournament for the second straight year. However, they were once again unable to get past the semifinals and fell short of their goal of reachingthe championship game

The Later Years

In 2014, the Ames varsity basketball team won the district championship, and they made it to the state tournament for the first time in school history. They were the first team from Ames to make it to the State Tournament in over 20 years.

In 2015, the team made it back to the State Tournament and they made it to the state semifinals for the first time in school history. They were one win away from making it to the state championship game.

In 2016, the team made it back to the State Tournament and they made it to the state championship game for the first time in school history. They lost in the state championship game, but they had a great run.

In 2017, the team made it back to the state tournament and they won the State Championship for the first time in school history. It was an amazing achievement for a great group of kids.

The Legacy

The Ames Basketball Program has produced some of the best players in the state of Iowa. Some of the more notable alumni include Jeff Horner, who played for the University of Iowa and was a two-time All-Big Ten selection; Harrison Barnes who played for the University of North Carolina and is now a member of the Golden State Warriors and Naz Mitrou-Long, who played for Iowa State University and is now a member of the Indiana Pacers

The Future

The Ames varsity basketball team is excited to be entering the district tournament as the number one seed. The team has features that make them a tough match-up for any opponent. They have size in the post, shooting ability on the perimeter, and playmakers that can create their own shot or find an open teammate.
