The Catamounts have won six regular season conference championships and have made it to the NCAA tournament 11 times. Most recently, the team won the 2017 Hockey East tournament and advanced to the Frozen Four.
While the team has had many great seasons, they are perhaps best known for their run to the Frozen Four in 2009. That year, led by eventual NHL star goalie Tim Thomas the Catamounts shocked the Hockey World by knocking off highly-ranked teams like Syracuse and New Hampshire en route to the final four. The team would eventually lose in the national semifinals, but their run is still considered one of the greatest in NCAA history.

The team has also produced numerous NHL players including current stars Tim Thomas and Patrick Sharp.
The program has also been marked by tragedy, most notably the death of J.P. Dumont in a car accident in 2003. Despite this, the team has continued to thrive, thanks in large part to the support of the passionate Vermont fanbase.

Vermont has appeared in the NCAA Men’s ice hockey Championship nineteen times, most recently in 2019. The Catamounts have advanced to the Frozen Four five times (last doing so in 2009) and have won two national championships, doing so back-to-back in 1996 and 1997. In addition to their two national titles, Vermont has won thirteen conference championships (seven regular season six tournament). As of 2019, seventy-eight Catamounts have gone on to play professional hockey including twenty-five who have played in the National Hockey League (NHL).
