NHL Draft history
NHL drafts are held annually, generally in late June or early July, in which teams from the NHL select eligible amateur players who have not yet been signed to professional contracts. The draft order is determined by a combination of the previous season’s standings, with teams that qualify for the playoffs selecting later in each round, and odds combo. Generally, each team is allowed one selection per round.
The NHL Entry Draft began in 1963 with the first overall selection of André Vachon by the Montreal Canadiens Prior to 1969, pre-selected Amateur scouts representing each NHL team would gather in a hotel room and choose their team’s draft picks from any eligible players they scouted that year. The Montreal Canadiens have chosen the first overall pick ten times: 1963 (André Vachon), 1965 (Jacques Laperrière), 1967 (Rejean Houle), 1968 (Serge Savard), 1974 (Richíe Sévigny), 1975 (Guy Lafleur), 1979 (Ray Bourque), 1980 (Doug Wickenheiser), 1983 (Kurt Waldeyer) and 1986 (Mats Naslund). Since 1969, the process has changed dramatically; North American amateur scouting staff prepare individual reports and submit their findings to their superiors who compile final rankings of North American and European skaters and goaltenders prior to the draft meeting. European scouts do not submit their rankings as they are under contract with European teams outside of the NHL
