Michael Callahan was born on December 21, 1995, in Anchorage, Alaska. He is currently a junior at the University of Alaska Fairbanks where he is pursuing a degree in business administration.

Callahan is 6’2” and weighs 205 pounds. He is a natural left winger but has also played center and defense. As a result, he is both a strong skater and an excellent playmaker. In his three years with the Nanooks, Callahan has tallied 45 goals and 46 assists for a total of 91 points in 115 games. He was named to the All-WCHA Rookie Team in 2014 and was an honorable mention for the All-WCHA Scholar-Athlete Team in 2016.

From Undrafted to the NHL

Michael Callahan is a 21-year-old American hockey player who went from being undrafted to signing an NHL contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning

Born in Scituate, Massachusetts, Callahan began playing hockey at a young age. He excelled at the sport and was eventually recruited to play for the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL). In his one season with the Lancers, Callahan tallied 21 goals and 37 assists in 60 games.

Despite his strong showing in the USHL, Callahan went undrafted in the 2018 NHL Draft However, he caught the attention of NHL scouts with his performance at the Lightning’s development camp and was signed to a three-year entry-level contract with the team in September 2018.

Callahan made his NHL debut on January 2, 2019, against the Buffalo Sabres and scored his first NHL goal on January 5, 2019, against the New York Islanders

Michael Callahan’s Journey to the NHL

Michael Callahan was born and raised in the United States and he has always loved hockey. When he was just a Young Boy he would watch NHL games on TV and dream of someday being a professional player.

Callahan began playing organized hockey when he was five years old. He quickly developed into a talented player and soon caught the attention of scouts from major Junior hockey leagues. When he was 16, Callahan was drafted by the Ontario Hockey League’s (OHL) Sarnia Sting.

He spent two seasons with the Sting, tallying 44 goals and 84 points in 127 games. His play earned him a spot on the United States national junior team for the IIHF World Junior Championship in 2009. Callahan helped the U.S. win a gold medal at the tournament, scoring four goals and eight points in seven games.

Following his impressive performance at the World Juniors, Callahan was drafted by the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning in the third round of the 2009 draft. He made his NHL debut with the Lightning during the 2010-11 season, but he would only appear in two games before being traded to the Anaheim Ducks midway through the campaign.

Callahan has spent parts of four seasons with Anaheim, but he has yet to establish himself as a full-time NHL player He has appeared in 44 career NHL games tallying seven goals and 12 points. In 2016-17, he spent most of his time with Anaheim’s AHL affiliate, the San Diego Gulls, where he scored 16 goals and 35 points in 59 games.

Despite not yet making a significant impact at the NHL level, Callahan remains an intriguing prospect for NHL teams because of his size (6’3″, 220 lbs) and scoring touch (he’s a two-time 20-goal scorer in the AHL). He will become an unrestricted free agent this summer and will likely have several teams interested in signing him to a contract.
