Plattsburgh State Women’s Hockey: A Brief History

In the early 1990s, Ron Desrosiers took over the Plattsburgh State women’s Hockey Program In his first season, the team went an impressive 20-2-1. The team’s success would continue in the years to come, as they would go on to win 9 NCAA Division III National Championships in a span of 10 years from 1999-2008. In addition, the team has won 12 ECAC West regular season titles and 11 ECAC West Tournament titles. The team has also produced a number of Olympians, including Julie Chu and Shannon Taylor.

Plattsburgh State Women’s Hockey: The Early Years

Plattsburgh State Women’s Hockey began in 1998 as a Division III program. The team won the first ever National Championship in women’s hockey in 1999. They would go on to win 5 more national titles in the next 10 years. During this time, Plattsburgh State became the dominant force in women’s college hockey winning more games than any other team in the country.

In 2009, the team made the jump to Division I, and they haven’t missed a beat since. In the 10 years since making the move, Plattsburgh State has won 4 national championships, making them the most successful team in Division I women’s hockey history. They have also been regular contenders for the conference title winning 8 of the last 10 conference championships

Plattsburgh State Women’s Hockey: The First National Championship

In 2015, the Plattsburgh State women’s Hockey Team made history by winning the first NCAA Division III National Championship The team, led by Head Coach Kevin Houle, went undefeated in the tournament, culminating in a 3-2 overtime victory against Norwich University in the final game

Since then, the Plattsburgh State women’s Hockey team has gone on to win two more national championships, in 2016 and 2018. In total, the team has won four conference championships and six Frozen Four appearances. Kevin Houle has been named Coach of the Year three times.

The team’s success is due in large part to its senior class, which includes All-Americans such as goalie Kassi Abbott and forwards Hannah Boyce and Erin McArdle. With four seniors graduating this year, the team will look to its younger players to step up and maintain its winning ways.

In only its fifteenth season of existence, the Plattsburgh State women’s Hockey Team has already cemented its legacy as one of the most successful programs in the country. With five national championships in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2016, the Cardinals have established themselves as a dynasty in Division III women’s hockey.

Under the leadership of head coach Kevin Horowitz, Plattsburgh State has compiled an impressive 516-42-12 record (.919 winning percentage) since its inaugural season in 2002-03. The Cardinals have also won ten straight SUNYAC regular season titles and nine SUNYAC tournament championships.

In addition to their on-ice success, the Plattsburgh State women’s Hockey Team has also excelled in the classroom. In each of the last five years, the Cardinals have had at least eight players named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District team. In 2015-16, Plattsburgh State had a program-record 12 players earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors.

In addition to their on-ice success, the team has also excelled in the classroom, earning the American Hockey Coaches Association’s Team Academic Award seven times.

In 2017, the Plattsburgh State University women’s hockey team won their seventh NCAA Division III National Championship This affected not only the school and the local community, but also Women’s college hockey as a whole. The win solidified Plattsburgh State as a dynasty in the sport, and helped to increase interest and participation in women’s college hockey nationwide.

The Plattsburgh State team is coached by Kevin Houle, who has been with the team since its inception in 1998.
