Team USA’s Paralympic Hockey History

Since the sport of disabled hockey was first played in the late 1940s, the USA has been a powerhouse in the Paralympic Games The USA’s first taste of Paralympic success came in 1976 when the team won a silver medal. Since then, the team has gone on to win four gold medals and two silver medals.

The USA is currently ranked second in the world behind Canada. The team is made up of athletes with a variety of disabilities, including blindness, paralysis, amputations, and cerebral palsy. Despite their different backgrounds, these athletes come together to form a high-performing team.

Here is a look at some of the key members of Team USA’s Paralympic Hockey Team

Goalie:
James Stuckley – Stuckley was born with congenital ptosis, which caused his eyelids to droop. He began his hockey career as a way to stay active and soon fell in love with the sport. Stuckley has been a member of Team USA since 2014 and was part of the team that won gold at the 2018 Paralympic Games

Defensemen:
Josh Pauls – Pauls was born with SMA Type 1, a condition that causes muscle weakness and paralysis. He began playing Sledge Hockey at age 8 and soon became one of the Top Players in his age group. Pauls made his Paralympic debut in 2014 and helped Team USA win gold at both the 2014 and 2018 Games.

Johnny Greaves – Greaves was born with cerebral palsy, which caused him to have difficulty walking and speaking. Despite these challenges, Greaves became an avid hockey fan and worked hard to become a member of Team USA’s sledge Hockey team He made his Paralympic debut in 2010 and is currently one of Team USA’s leading scorers.

With the 2018 Winter Paralympics underway, it’s time to get to know the USA Paralympic Hockey Team roster. This year’s team is made up of 12 athletes, all of whom have Medal of Honor recipients. The team is coached by Guy Gosselin, who has been with the team since 2012.

Goalies:
Penny Greely – The eternal optimist of the group, Penny is always looking on the bright side and loves to have a good time. If she’s not making a save, she’s probably trying to score a goal.
Oksana Masters – A fierce competitor, Oksana doesn’t take any prisoners on the ice. She’s all business when she’s in net and her teammates know better than to mess with her when she’s in game mode

Forwards:
Declan Farmer – The young gun of the team, Declan is one of the most talented players on the ice. His speed and energy are unmatched and he’s always working hard to get better.
Evan Strong – A experienced veteran, Evan is a leader on and off the ice. He’s always working hard to improve his game and help his team win.
Dominic Lawson – A big body with a big heart, Dominic is always one of the first ones on the ice and one of the last ones off. He loves to hit and he’s not afraid to goes up against anyone.
Josh Pauls – One of the most accomplished players on the team, Josh is a true professional. He works hard in every game and practice and it shows in his performance.

The USA Paralympic Hockey team is coached by Craig Parnham and led by captain Mike Scheffel. The team also includes assistant captain Adam Page, and goaltenders Steve Cash and Jaredabandu, who was recently named the MVP of the 2018-2019 World Championships

The U.S. Paralympic sled hockey team is composed of 15 athletes with lower-body disabilities, most of whom have lost their legs below the knee or suffer from partial paralysis. The team trains full time at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Team USA’s Paralympic Hockey Roster is made up of:
-Josh Sweeney: A double-amputee who was wounded by an improvised explosive device while serving in Afghanistan. He is a longtime member of the USA Disabled Hockey Program and has represented Team USA at three World Championships
-Declan Farmer: A triple-amputee who lost his legs and right arm while serving in Afghanistan. He started playing sled hockey at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and went on to compete for Team USA at the 2016 World Sled Hockey Challenge where he was named MVP.
-Kaleb Dahlgren: A left-arm amputee who lost his arm while serving in Afghanistan. He is a former member of the Canadian National Sledge Team and won a bronze medal with Team Canada at the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.
– Brody Roybal: An amputee who lost his legs as a child. He is a two-time member of Team USA (2014, 2018) and was captain of the gold medal winning team at the 2017 World Para Ice Hockey Championships.
– Noah Grove: A lower-body amputee who lost his legs as a child. He is making his Paralympic debut in 2018 after winning gold with Team USA at both the 2015 and 2017 World Para Ice hockey Championships.

Tyler Carron: A former collegiate hockey player who was paralyzed from the waist down after suffering a spinal cord injury in 2012. He has become one of the team’s biggest fans, attending every Home game and even helping out with on-ice training sessions.
