In 1903, a team from Columbus, Ohio called the Buckeyes became one of the first teams west of the Allegheny Mountains to win an AAU tournament. The Buckeyes were led by their star player George Reese. Reese was just six feet tall, but he was a superb shooter and an excellent athlete. He would go on to become one of the first professional basketball players

The Buckeyes continued their success in 1904, winning another AAU tournament. They also won tournaments in 1906 and 1907. In 1908, they finally lost in the finals of an AAU tournament, but they came back to win it all again in 1909.

By this time, basketball was becoming extremely popular in Ohio. In 1910, there were over 1,000 AAU-affiliated teams in Ohio alone. The Buckeyes were clearly the best team in the state and one of the best teams in the country.

In 1911, however, things take a turn for the worse for the Buckeyes. George Reese suddenly dies from complications related to diabetes. Without their star player they are no longer able to compete at the same level and they never again win an AAU tournament.

The Buckeyes’ reign as the best basketball team in Ohio comes to an end, but their legacy lives on. They are remembered as one of the greatest basketball teams of all time and their story is told to this day as an example of what can be achieved through hard work and dedication
