The Akron Zips men’s Basketball team represents the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. The team currently competes in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) East Division as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Division I.
The Zips began play in 1902 and currently play their home games at the James A. Rhodes Arena on the university’s campus. The Zips are currently coached by John Groce who was hired on March 22, 2016.
In July 2018, the school announced it would leave the MAC for the Horizon League effective July 1, 2020.

The Akron Zips men’s basketball team represents the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. The Zips compete in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) as a member of the East Division. The team plays its home games at James A. Rhodes Arena on the university’s Akron campus. The Zips began competing in basketball in 1908. Since then, they have appeared in eleven NCAA Division I Tournaments and eight National Invitation Tournaments.
In 2018, the Zips won the MAC Tournament Championship to earn their first NCAA tournament berth since 2005. In 2019, they appeared in their first NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament since 2018 as a 12 seed in the South Region, losing to eventual national runner-up Kentucky in the First Round.
The Zips hold two national records: They made more Free throws (73) than any other team during a four overtime game against Marshall University on January 11, 1987; and attempte

After a long and exciting season, the Akron Zips men’s Basketball team has finally completed their schedule. Here is a look at how they did in the final games of the season:
The Zips started off strong with a win against Kent State in the Mid-American conference tournament They followed that up with another win against Bowling Green in the semifinals. In the Championship game they faced off against Buffalo, who had defeated them earlier in the season. The Zips came out on top, winning by a score of 70-65.
This win earned them a spot in the NCAA Tournament where they faced off against Virginia Commonwealth in the first round. The Zips put up a good fight, but ultimately lost by a score of 77-54.
Despite this loss, it was still a successful season for the Akron Zips men’s Basketball Team They won the Mid-American conference tournament and made it to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2015.
