Education System

The higher education system in the United States is unique among developed countries in a number of ways. First, it is decentralized, with each of the approximately 5,000 colleges and universities having considerable autonomy over academic programs and admission requirements. Second, the federal government provides very little direct funding for undergraduate education; most of the support comes from state governments, private sources such as foundations and alumni donations, and student tuition payments. Third, there are many different types of institutions, including public universities, private colleges, community colleges, women’s colleges, liberal arts colleges, and religious affiliation-based colleges.

The vast majority of college students in the United States attend public institutions. According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), about 80 percent of undergraduate students were enrolled in public colleges and universities in Fall 2016. The remaining 20 percent were enrolled in private institutions.
