Early life and college career
Baylor Scheierman was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, to parents Melissa and Jon Scheierman. He has three older sisters, Brooklyn, Blair, and Brittany. Growing up, he played organized basketball through eighth grade but then became more interested in football and track & field. By his senior year of High School he had grown to 6’6″, making him too tall to play football comfortably, so he turned his focus back to basketball. He played AAU Basketball for the Nebraska Barnstormers. He originally committed to play college basketball for George Mason University but decommitted and instead chose to play for South Dakota State University (SDSU).
Scheierman played four seasons for the Jackrabbits. As a freshman, he averaged 2.4 points and 1.4 rebounds per game coming off the bench in 31 games. As a sophomore, he became a starter and averaged 10.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while shooting 42 percent from three-point range After the season, he was named honorable mention All-Summit League As a junior, he averaged 14.9 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while shooting 39 percent from three-point range and was again named honorable mention All-Summit League As a senior, he averaged 17 points and 6 rebounds per game while shooting 43 percent from three-point range; he was again named honorable mention All-Summit League as well as third team All-Summit League. He finished his collegiate career with 1,390 points (tenth in SDSU history), 608 rebounds (seventh in SDSU history), 176 assists (ninth in SDSU history), and 160 three-pointers made (sixth in SDSU history).

As a senior in 2019–20, he averaged 22.6 points per game and 10.0 rebounds per game, leading his team to a 25–1 record and the No. 1 ranking in Class 5A of the Colorado high school Activities Association (CHSAA).
