The school was founded in 1960 and is named after the founder of the Congregation of Christian Brothers Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice. Brother Rice competes in the Catholic League and is a member of the Michigan high school Athletic Association (MHSAA). The Basketball team has won 13 Catholic League championships and 3 MHSAA championships.

The Brother Rice basketball team began its journey to success in the 1967-1968 season when head coach Bob Hurley Sr. led the team to its first Catholic League Championship The team went on to win the MHSAA championship that year, defeating Annapolis high school in the finals.
