BYU Basketball Tv: What To Watch For Player Analysis
Payton Dastrup – Payton is a 6’10” center that transferred to BYU from Oregon State He played two years for the Beavers before sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. He will be eligible to play this season for the Cougars.
Dastrup is a big body in the post that can score with both his back to the basket and facing up. He has a nice touch around the basket and is a good free throw shooter. He will need to work on his conditioning and lateral quickness at the defensive end of the floor. But he has the potential to be a very good player for BYU.
TJ Haws – TJ is a 6’4″ guard that will be a junior this season. He was BYU’s leading scorer last year, averaging 15 points per game He is a very good shooter from three-point range and is also a good ball-handler and passer. Haws will need to continue to improve his defense and become more aggressive on that end of the floor. But he has All-American potential and is one of the best players in the country.
Yoeli Childs – Yoeli is a 6’8″ forward that will be a sophomore this season. He was BYU’s second leading scorer last year, averaging 14 points per game Childs is an excellent rebounder and shot-blocker. He needs to continue to work on his offensive game, but he has All-Conference potential and is one of the best young players in the country.

Player recaps
In advance of Saturday’s game against Pepperdine, here are a few things to keep an eye on as the BYU basketball team takes the court.
-Matt Carlino: The junior point guard has been on a tear as of late, averaging 16.9 points and 5.6 assists over the last five games. He’ll look to keep it going against a Pepperdine team that has had trouble stopping opposing backcourts all season long
-Tyler Haws: The sophomore sharpshooter continues to be the Cougars’ go-to option on offense, averaging 21.8 points per game He’ll need to be at his best against a Pepperdine squad that has been much improved defensively in recent weeks. Keep an eye on Haws’ outside shooting; if he gets hot from long range, the Cougars will be tough to beat.
-Nate Austin: The 6’11” forward has been a key cog in the BYU frontcourt all season, averaging 10.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. He’ll have his work cut out for him against a Pepperdine team that features two big men in the 6’7″ range; look for Austin to use his size and strength to try and take advantage in the post.
Team recaps
The Brigham Young University men’s basketball team has had an up-and-down season, but they’re still in the running for a spot in the NCAA Tournament Here’s what to watch for as the season comes to a close:
-The Cougars have a strong frontcourt, led by senior center Eric Mika. Mika is averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds per game, and he’s a force on both ends of the court.
-BYU has struggled with consistent shooting this season, but they have a Number of players who can get hot from outside. Senior guard Tyler Haws is the team’s best shooter, but junior guard Chase Fisher and freshman forward TJ Haws have also been dangerous from three-point range.
-The Cougars are a good rebounding team, thanks in part to Mika’s presence in the paint. They’re also very efficient on offense, ranking seventh in the nation in offensive efficiency according to KenPom.com.
-BYU has had trouble with turnovers this season, particularly on offense. They rank 275th in the nation in turnover rate, so taking care of the ball will be key for them down the stretch.
The Cougars have a tough road ahead, with games against Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s, and Weber State remaining on their schedule. But if they can put it all together, they could make some noise in March.
