2019 Roster

The 2019 Carson Newman baseball team is made up of 34 student-athletes, representing 15 states across the country. The team is made up of 27 freshmen, 4 sophomores, 2 juniors, and 1 senior. The team is coached by Head Coach Chris Moore and assistant coaches Greg McLaughlin and Connor Echols.

Team Captains

The 2019 Carson Newman University baseball team is led by seniors Hunter Mullins and Tyler Gaby. Both players are four-year starters and have been key contributors to the team’s success over the past few seasons.

Mullins, a native of Knoxville, TN, is a right-handed pitcher who has been one of the team’s top starters for the past two years. Gaby, originally from Greeneville, TN, plays infield and is one of the team’s best hitters. He was named First Team All-South Atlantic Conference last season.

The team also has a number of other experienced players who will play important roles this season. Senior infielder/outfielder Drew Fulmer, junior outfielder/pitcher Ryan Rector, and junior pitcher Austin Franklin are all returning starters. Sophomore catcher Chase Edwards is a key player on Offense and defense while sophomore infielder Nate Montgomery provides depth in the infield.

Newcomers

The Carson-Newman Eagles will have some new faces on the diamond this season as they look to build off an impressive 2018 campaign. Here’s a closer look at the newcomers to the 2019 roster:

IF Luke Harbison (So., Cleveland, Tenn.)
An explosive athlete with a tremendous arm, Harbison comes to Carson-Newman after one season at Hiwassee College. He was named an NJCAA Division II Baseball preseason honorable mention All-American prior to his senior season of High School As a freshman at Hiwassee, he batted .333 with two home runs 10 RBIs and nine stolen bases in 39 games.

RHP Connor Grant (R-Jr., Franklin, Tenn.)
Grant returns to Carson-Newman after missing the 2018 season due to injury. He’ll look to pick up where he left off in 2017 when he went 6-1 with one save and a 3.86 ERA in 21 relief appearances, striking out 34 batters in 37 innings pitched Prior to his time at Carson-Newman, Grant spent one season pitching at Volunteer State Community College

LHP Tanner shooting (Jr., Maryville, Tenn.)
A crafty southpaw who doesn’t give up many hard hit balls, Sinnen comes to Carson-Newman after two seasons pitching at Walters State Community College He went 3-2 with a 2.76 ERA in 16 relief appearances as a sophomore, striking out 30 batters in 29 innings pitched. Sinnen was named an NJCAA Division II second team all-American as a freshman after going 8-1 with three saves and a 1.87 ERA in 19 relief appearances.

Pitching Staff

The 2019 Carson Newman baseball roster is filled with talented pitchers that are sure to make an impact this season. Here is a closer look at the team’s pitching staff.

Leading the way is Senior right-handed pitcher Tyler Tuthill, who was named to the All-South Atlantic Conference First Team last season. Tuthill was also named the SAC Pitcher of the Year after posting a 9-1 record with a 2.78 ERA. He will be joined by fellow senior right-hander Braden McMahan, who led the team in strikeouts last season with 86.

Other key members of the pitching staff include junior right-handers Peyton Bartleson and Caleb Adams, who both saw significant action last season. Sophomores Connor Jones and Michael Gibson round out the rotation and will be looking to make an impact this season.

Infielders

The 2019 Carson Newman Baseball Team will be led by a strong group of infielders. The infield will be anchored by senior first baseman Zach Bevis. Bevis was an All-American and a vital part of the team’s run to the College World Series last season. Other key members of the infield include junior second baseman Alex Reynolds and sophomore third baseman Tyler Lane. The infield will also feature several new faces, including freshman shortstop Cam Wittmer and freshman third baseman Michael Riopedre.

Outfielders

The Carson-Newman Eagles baseball team will look to defend their South Atlantic Conference Championship Title in 2019. The team is made up of a mix of experienced and young talent, with a strong core of upperclassmen leading the way. Here’s a closer look at the team’s outfielders.

senior Alex Ward was a key contributor in 2018, starting all 50 games in left field and batting .314 with six home runs and 32 RBIs. He’ll be joined in the outfield by junior Jackson Raper, who started 42 games in right field last season and batted .263 with two homers and 18 RBIs. Sophomore TJ Hopkins returns after starting 21 games in center field as a freshman, when he hit .279 with one homer and 15 RBIs.

The Eagles also have a talented group of newcomers that will compete for playing time in the outfield. Freshmen Weston Bell and Peyton Meigs both bring speed and athleticism to the position, while redshirt freshman Johnathon Dougherty is a power hitter that could see time at designated hitter as well.

Catchers

The 2019 Carson Newman Baseball roster is made up of 21 players, including two catchers. Senior Dylan Ingram and junior Daniel Becker make up the catching corps for the Eagles.

Ingram, who is from Knoxville, Tennessee, is in his fourth year with the team and has appeared in 31 games. He has a career batting average of .257 with one home run and 15 RBIs.

Becker, from Jefferson City, Tennessee, is entering his third season with Carson Newman. He has played in 17 games and has a batting average of .333 with one home run and nine RBIs.

Schedule

The 2019 Carson Newman baseball season will begin on February 1st with a road game against Virginia Tech The team’s first Home game will be on February 15th against Seton Hill The schedule is highlighted by games against SEC foes Tennessee and Kentucky, as well as home games against in-state rivals Middle Tennessee State Belmont, and Lipscomb.

Roster Notes

Carson-Newman enters the 2019 campaign coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history. The Eagles went 47-15 overall, won their second straight South Atlantic conference championship and made their seventh appearance in NCAA Division II postseason play. Carson-Newman will have to replace some key cogs from that squad, but returns a wealth of experience that should help the Eagles make another run at a conference title and a spot in the NCAA tournament

2019 Season Outlook

Carson Newman begins the 2019 season looking to build off a strong 2018 campaign in which the Eagles went 33-24 overall and 17-10 in South Atlantic conference play to finish fourth in the League Standings The Eagles will be under the direction of second-year head coach Tom Griffin, who returns 11 lettermen and five positional starters from last year’s team.
