Introduction
It’s safe to say that the Detroit Public Schools Community District’s Cass Tech boys basketball team is on the rise.
Under the leadership of Coach Sankofa, the team has gone from a below .500 record just a few years ago to one of the top teams in the state. Last year, they finished with a 20-3 record and were ranked #3 in Division 1 by the Detroit News.
This year, they are off to an even better start with a 9-0 record and are ranked #1 in Division 1. They have wins over some of the top teams in the state, including Detroit Western, Romeo, and Ann Arbor Pioneer
The team is led by senior captain and point guard Mikey Williams who is averaging 19 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds per game He is being recruited by some of the top colleges in the country and will be a key factor in determining how far this team can go this season.
The goal for this team is to win a state championship and with their talent and determination, they have a good chance to achieve that goal.
History
The Cass Tech High School Basketball Program is one of the most storied in the state of Michigan. The program has produced numerous Division I players and has sent multiple teams to the State Tournament
The program began in the early 1920s, and quickly rose to prominence in Detroit. The team won its first City Championship in 1922, and would go on to win nine more titles in the next decade. In the 1930s, Cass Tech was a powerhouse, winning six city championships and finishing as state runners-up in 1932.
The program continued to be successful in the 1940s and 1950s, winning five more city titles. In 1954, the team made its first appearance in the State Tournament but lost in the semifinals.
The 1960s were a down period for Cass Tech Basketball as the team won just one city title. But the program rebounded in the 1970s, winning three city championships and making two trips to the state tournament
In recent years Cass Tech has been on the rise again. The team won back-to-back city championships in 2016 and 2017, and made it to the state tournament for the first time since 1954. The future looks bright for Cass Tech Basketball as the program continues to produce Division I talent and contend for city titles.
