That historic season was made possible by a talented core of players, including future NBA Star Bradley Beal But it was also thanks to Head Coach Walter “Doc” Harper, who instilled a disciplined, team-first mentality in his players.

The team’s success on the court led to a spike in popularity for Cherokee basketball, and the school’s gymnasium soon became one of the most popular places in town. Every Home game was packed with enthusiastic fans, and away games were often televised locally so that people could watch from home.

As Cherokee high school looks to the future, the Basketball Program is in good hands. With a strong core of young players and a promising coach, the team is poised for continued success.

The core of the team is made up of sophomores and juniors who have already shown they can compete at a high level. Jordan Hendrix, a 6’1” guard, is one of the top scorers in the state. She averaged 21 points per game as a sophomore and was recently named to the all-state team. Joining her in the backcourt is Charity McKinney, a 5’10” guard who is one of the best defenders in the state. She was named to the all-state defensive team as a sophomore.

In the frontcourt, junior 6’3” center Breanna Winfrey anchors the defense. She was also named to the all-state defensive team as a sophomore. Rounding out the starting lineup is sophomore forward Leah Thompson, who provides a spark off the bench with her energy and hustle.

The Coaching Staff is led by head coach Jason Griffin, who has been with the program for four years. Under his leadership, Cherokee has won two State Championships and has been one of the top programs in the state. He has been named Coach of the Year three times and was recently inducted into the Cherokee Hall of Fame
