The History of Christ The King Basketball
Christ the King Regional High School is a private, Catholic high school located in Queens, New York. The school’s basketball team has won numerous city and State Championships and is widely considered one of the best high school basketball programs in the country.
The Christ the King Basketball Program was founded in 1957 by Head Coach Joe Arlotta. Arlotta’s teams won five New York City Catholic high school championships in his first eight years at the helm. In 1967, Arlotta led Christ the King to its first ever state championship
Arlotta retired in 1974, and was succeeded by Bob Ledford. Ledford’s teams won four city championships and two state championships in his ten years at Christ the King.
In 1984, current head coach Bob Hurley took over the program. Under Hurley’s guidance, Christ the King has won twelve city championships and six State Championships The team has also been nationally ranked on numerous occasions, and won the prestigious USA Today National Championship in 1985.
Christ the King has produced many successful NBA players including Lamar Odom Speedy Claxton, Khalid Reeves, Jay Williams Trey Burke, and Mike Sweetney. Several current NBA players also attended Christ the King, including Kemba Walker Josh Jackson Malik Monk, and Rawle Alkins.

The two teams have met in the Championship game of the prestigious Nike Tournament of Champions four times in the last decade, with Christ the King winning three times. Christ the King has also won two of the three meetings between the two teams in the State Tournament
Another top rival for Christ the King is Murry Bergtraum High School in New York City Bergtraum has won more state championships than any other team in New York history, but Christ the King has had theirNumber once again, winning 14 out of 18 meetings between the two teams since 2000. Bergtraum is also one of only two teams to beat Christ the King in a Playoff Game during Head coach Bob Mackey’s tenure at Christ the King.
Oak Hill Academy, located in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, is another top rival of Christ the King. Oak Hill has been one of the nation’s top programs for many years, and they have won three of four meetings against Christ the Kingdomcluding a victory in last year’s Nike Tournament of Champions semifinals.
