Get to Know the CNU Baseball Roster

This season, the Christopher Newport University Captains baseball team is composed of some very talented young men. Get to know them a little better by reading this blog post!

Introduction

The Christopher Newport University (CNU) Baseball Team is composed of student athletes who have a passion for the game and the determination to succeed at the collegiate level. The roster is filled with talented players from all over the country, each bringing their own unique skillset to the team. Head Coach John Harvell has put together a squad that is poised for success in the upcoming season Get to know the CNU baseball roster below.

The Roster

The Christopher Newport University baseball team is composed of 30 student-athletes from across the country. During the season, these athletes callCNU home and embody our Captains Pride. From the left side of the infield to the right side of the outfield, check out some key members of the team that will be representing CNU this season.

The Infield

The Infielders
The infield is usually composed of four players- the first baseman, second baseman, shortstop, and third baseman. They play close to the batter and their main responsibility is to field ground balls

First baseman- The first baseman is on the first base side of second base. They need to have quick reflexes to stretch for wide throws. They also back up throws to second base and are responsible for catching foul balls in their area.

Second baseman- The second baseman is on the second base side of first base. They need Good footwork to be able to pivot quickly to make double plays. They also need quick hands to turn double plays smoothly. They field bunts that are between them and first base as well as bunts that are between them and the pitcher’s mound.

Shortstop- The shortstop is on the second base side of third base. They need good range and a strong arm to be able make plays in the hole. They also need good footwork for double plays. They are responsible for catching Pop ups in their area as well as fielding bunts that are between them and third base.

Third baseman- The third baseman is on the third base side of home plate They need a strong arm to be able make long throws across the diamond. They also need good range to be able make plays on balls hit down the line. They are responsible for catching pop ups in their area as well field bunts that are between them and home plate

The Outfield

Outfielders for the Christopher Newport University (CNU) Captains baseball team are some of the most hard-working and athletically gifted players on the roster. These young men are responsible for covering a large portion of the outfield grass and tracking down fly balls hit by the opposition.

The Captains currently have four outstanding outfielders: senior Alex Williamson, junior Zack Smith, sophomore Hayden Harlow, and freshman Will Hunter. Alex Williamson, who hails from Chesapeake, Virginia, is a four-year starter for the Captains and is one of the team’s most experienced players. Zack Smith, from Hampton, Virginia, is a three-year starter who has improved his batting average and Slugging percentage each season. Hayden Harlow, from Richmond, Virginia, is a two-year starter who has been one of the team’s top run producers over that span. Will Hunter, from Newport News, Virginia, is a highly touted freshman who has already made an impact in his first season with the team.

Each of these outfielders brings something unique to the table and they have all been instrumental in CNU’s success over the past few seasons. Be sure to check them out next time you come to a Captains game!

The Pitchers

The Captains have 12 pitchers on their roster and they come from all over the country. Here’s a brief introduction to the pitchers of the Christopher Newport University baseball team

RHP Robbie Baker is a junior from Virginia Beach Virginia. He’s 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds. In his freshman year, he appeared in four games and had one start. He pitched 10.2 innings and had a 3.48 ERA.

LHP Kyle Crockett is a senior from Poquoson, Virginia. He’s 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds. Crockett was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB Draft He played in 24 games for the Captains last season, starting seven of them. He had a 3-2 record with a 4.50 ERA in 54 innings pitched

RHP Connor Eason is a freshman from Chesapeake, Virginia. He’s 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds. Eason was a three-time All-Conference selection in High School and was named Conference Player of the Year as a senior.

LHP Zac Favato is a sophomore from Gloucester, Virginia. He’s 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds. Favato pitched in 22 games for CNU last season, starting five of them. He had a 5-1 record with two saves and a 3.86 ERA in 54 innings pitched

The Coaches

The Coaching Staff for the Christopher Newport University Baseball Team is dedicated to helping the young men under their charge not only develop their skills on the diamond, but also grow into responsible young adults.

Head coach John Harvell is entering his sixth season at the helm of the Captains, and he has compiled a record of 194-82 (.704) during his time at CNU. Harvell was named the Dixie Conference Coach of the Year in 2016, and he has led CNU to four NCAA tournament appearances.

The Schedule

The Christopher Newport Baseball team will play their first game of the 2019 season on February 15th against Virginia Wesleyan Their home opener will be on February 22nd against Ferrum. The Captains will then host Shenandoah on February 23rd before heading out on a six game road trip

The Tickets

The Christopher Newport Captains baseball team is composed of young men from across the country who have come to Newport News, Virginia to play the game they love at the highest level of collegiate competition. These student-athletes attend Christopher Newport University and are enrolled full time in undergraduate or graduate degree programs. While on campus, they also enjoy all that CNU has to offer as a top-ranked public liberal arts university. During their time as Captains, these student-athletes will create lasting memories and build relationships that will last a lifetime.

-Catcher: Alvaro Espinoza
Espinoza is a 5-foot-8, 185-pounder who throws and bats right-handed. He hails from Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico.

-Pitcher: Jorge Pantoja
Pantoja is a 6-foot-2, 195-pounder who throws and bats right-handed. He’s from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico
