Christopher Newport University A History

Christopher Newport University is a public university in Newport News, Virginia. The school was founded in 1960 as a two-year college and became a four-year university in 1964. CNU is part of the Virginia Community College System and offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The university is named after Christopher Newport who led the first English colony to Virginia.

CNU baseball started in 1969, when the school was known as Christopher Newport College. The team won the first NCAA Division III Baseball World Series in 1976. In 1984, CNU moved to Division II and made it to the Division II College World Series in 1986. In 1988, CNU returned to Division III and has been there ever since. The Captains have made it back to the DIII World Series four times since then, winning it all in 2014 and 2016.

The Christopher Newport University baseball program has been a premiere program in the NCAA Division III for many years. The program has seen success at the conference, regional, and national level. The team has won the NCAA Division III National Championship four times, most recently in 2016. The team has also won fifteen conference championships eleven Regional Championships and five College World Series appearances.

The Christopher Newport University baseball league is a collegiate summer baseball league affiliated with Christopher Newport University. The league began play in 2011 and features six teams from across Virginia. The league plays a 40-game regular season schedule, with each team playing 20 games at home and 20 games on the road. The top four teams in the standings advance to the postseason, which consists of a best-of-three playoff series. The league champion is determined by a single Championship game

The Captains began play in 1992 and have compiled an all-time record of 597–420–5. They have won nine conference championships and made seven appearances in the NCAA Division III baseball Tournament.

The Christopher Newport University Baseball Playoffs

The Christopher Newport University (CNU) Baseball team will face Emory & Henry College in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division III baseball playoffs The double-elimination tournament will be held at Hooks Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina The other teams in the four-team regional are No. 1-seeded Salisbury University and No. 4 Guilford College. The games will be played on Thursday, May 16 (2:30 p.m.), Friday, May 17 (7:00 p.m.), and Saturday, May 18 (2:00 p.m., if necessary). Emory & Henry defeated Gannon University 9-6, on Sunday to clinch the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament CNU is making its 12th overall appearance in the NCAA Division III baseball playoffs and its first since 2016.

Since 2006, the Christopher Newport University baseball team has been a powerhouse in the Division III World Series. The team has appeared in the World Series six times, winning it all in 2009 and 2011. With a strong core of talented players returning for the 2019 season, the Christopher Newport University Baseball team is once again poised to make a run at the Division III World Series title.
