The Lions have appeared in two NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournaments Their first appearance came in 1968, when they defeated Princeton in the first round before falling to North Carolina in the second round. Their second appearance came in 1979, when they defeated Penn in the first round before falling to Syracuse in the second round.
The Lions have appeared in one National Invitation Tournament Their lone appearance came in 1971, when they defeated Fordham in the first round before falling to Pittsburgh in the second round.

The Team
The Columbia Lions Men’s basketball team is a Division I college Basketball team that competes in the Ivy League The team is currently coached by Jim Engles and plays its home games at the Levien Gymnasium in New York City The Lions are comprised of student-athletes from across the United States and Canada.
The Coach
As the Head Coach of the Columbia Lions Men’s basketball team Jim Engles is responsible for leading the team to success on and off the court. A native of New Jersey, Coach Engles began his coaching career at his alma mater, Seton Hall University. He has also served as an Assistant Coach at the University Of Pennsylvania and Rutgers University In 2014, he was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year after leading Columbia to a 19-13 record and a berth in the conference tournament
Under Coach Engles, the Lions have compiled a record of 60-60. In addition to his coaching duties, he also serves as the director of basketball operations at Columbia.

The Rivalries
The Columbia Lions men’s basketball team is a historic program with a rich tradition of success. The Lions have been to the NCAA tournament 12 times and have won 20 Ivy League championships the most of any team in the conference. The Lions have also been to the NIT 10 times.
The Lions have many rivals, both in the Ivy League and outside of it. The most notable rivals are the Penn Quakers, whom the Lions have played more than any other team in their history. The Quakers lead the all-time series 106-81, but the Lions have won four of the last six meetings between the two teams.
The Lions also have a strong rivalry with the Cornell Big Red The two teams have met 190 times, with Cornell leading the all-time series 102-88. The lions have won four of the last five meetings between the two teams, including a come-from-behind victory in 2019 that saw them erase a 14-point deficit in the second half.

In addition, the Lions have had three head coaches who have gone on to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Chuck Daly, Pete Carril, and Tom Cahill.
