The Early Years

Faulkner Basketball: A Tradition of Excellence can be traced back to the early years of the program. The team was founded in 1952, when a group of students decided to start a basketball team The team quickly became one of the most successful programs in the state of Alabama, winning multiple State Championships

In the early years, Faulkner basketball was known for its strong defense and disciplined play. The team was led by Head Coach Joe Glass, who coached the team to its first state championship in 1957. Glass continued to lead the team to success throughout the 1960s and 1970s, winning another state championship in 1967.

Under Glass’ leadership, Faulkner became one of the elite basketball programs in the country. In 1975, the team was ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today The team continued to be successful under Glass’ successor, Wayne Tuggle, winning two more state championships in 1980 and 1982.

Today, Faulkner basketball is still one of the most successful programs in Alabama. The team has won five State Championships since 2000 and has made multiple appearances in the NCAA Division II tournament.

The Championship Years

In 1957, the Faulkner Eagles began a streak of 5 consecutive NAIA Division 1 basketball championships that would solidify the school as a Basketball powerhouse From 1957 to 1961, Faulkner Basketball was led by legendary coach Homer Edwin Price, who would go on to be inducted in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame

Over the next several decades, Faulkner basketball would continue to find success, appearing in the NAIA tournament 19 times and winning 3 more championships. In 2000, Faulkner made the jump to NCAA Division II and has since won 2 more championships, cementing its legacy as one of the most successful small college basketball programs in history.

The Post-Championship Years

After their National Championship in 1933, the Faulkner Eagles Basketball team continued to dominate the sport on both a regional and national level. The team made it to the final four in 1934, 1935, and 1936, winning the National Championship in 1936. The following years were not as successful for the Eagles, as they failed to make it past the Elite Eight in 1937 and 1938. However, they rebounded in 1939, once again making it to the final four and winning the National Championship

The Eagles were not as successful in the 1940s as they were in the 1930s, only making it to the Elite Eight twice in the decade. They had a resurgence in the 1950s under new head coach Billy Donovan Sr., making it to the final four three times and winning the National Championship in 1958. The team continued to be successful in the 1960s under Coach Donovan, making it to the Elite Eight four times and winning two more National Championships in 1961 and 1962.

The 1970s were a decade of rebuilding for Faulkner basketball. The team only made it to the NCAA tournament three times in the decade, with their best finish being a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 1977. The 1980s saw a return to success for Faulkner basketball, as they made it back to the NCAA Tournament six times and won two more national championships, in 1981 and 1982.

The 1990s were a decade of transition for Faulkner basketball. After winning their ninth National Championship in 1992, Head Coach Billy Donovan Jr. left to take over at Florida State University His replacement was unable to maintain Faulkner’s level of success, as the team only made it back to the NCAA tournament twice during the decade. They did win another regional title in 1999 under new Head coach Steve Fisher, but this would prove to be their only post-season success of the decade.

The 21st century has seen a return to prominence for Faulkner basketball. After missing out on post-season play for several years, they returned tothe NCAA tournamentin 2006 under head coach Byron Scott. They have since made five more appearances inthe NCAA tournamentand have won two more regional titles (in 2010 and 2012). Under Scott’s successor Mark Few ,the Eagles have continuedto be one ofthe top teams inthe country , with five WCC regular season titlesand fiveWCC Tournament titlesin six years . In 2017 ,they finally recaptured National Championship , defeating Penn State 67-54in thenational title game . TheEagles currently have an all-time recordof 2211-1573 (.583), nine national championships ,and 28 conference championships .

In recent years the Faulkner Basketball Program has undergone a massive transformation. The team has seen a resurgence in performance and dominance, under new head coach Tony McGhee. The Eagles now hold the record for the most wins in a single season in program history, and are poised to make a run at the National Championship

The Coaching Staff

The Faulkner University men’s Basketball Program has a rich tradition of success, and that tradition is carried on by the hard work and dedication of the Coaching Staff

Head coach J.D. Byers has been at the helm of the program since 2013, and under his leadership, the team has reached new heights, including a conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II tournament. Byers’ staff is committed to helping each player reach his full potential, both on and off the court.

Assistant coach Dontrell Brite is in his first season with Faulkner, but he is no stranger to winning, having served on staff at two NCAA Division I schools prior to coming to Montgomery. Brite specializes in player development and scouting, and he played an integral role in Faulkner’s run to the conference title last season.

Rounding out the staff is director of operations Tyler Geving, who oversees all day-to-day activities for the team. Geving joined Faulkner after spending four years at Robert Morris University where he helped lead the basketball program to unprecedented success.

The Faulkner coaching staff is committed to helping each player reach his full potential and continuing the tradition of excellence that has defined Faulkner basketball for so many years.

The Current Team

The current Faulkner University Men’s basketball team is made up of a group of young men who have worked hard to uphold the tradition of excellence that the program is known for. This team is committed to each other and to the task of representing Faulkner University with distinction. They are a talented group of players who share a common goal of being the best they can be, both on and off the court.

This team is coached by J. D. Byrd, who has been with the program for six years. Coach Byrd’s goal is to build upon the winning tradition that has been established at Faulkner University, and he has put together a staff that is dedicated to helping our student-athletes reach their full potential.

The current roster includes:

1. Senior guard Tyrone Lewis Jr., who was named second team All-American by the NAIA last season. He is a vocal leader on and off the court, and he is committed to helping his teammates reach their goals.
2. Junior guard Jordan Knott, who was named an honorable mention All-American by the NAIA last season. He is a gifted shooter with a High Basketball IQ, and he provides steady leadership for this team.
3. Sophomore guard Jalen Crowder, who was named the SSAC Newcomer of the Year last season. He is an explosive scorer with a knack for making Big Shots in big moments.
4.. Freshman guard TJ Fleming, who was rated as a four-star recruit by ESPN coming out of High School He is a dynamic playmaker with unlimited potential, and he has already made an impact on this team.
5.. Freshman forward James Enix, who was rated as a four-star recruit by ESPN coming out of high school He is a versatile player with a high motor, and he brings energy and athleticism to this team..
