The 1970s were another decade of rebuilding for Villanova Basketball as they failed to make it back to the NCAA tournament until 1976. They made it back-to-back appearances in 1977 and 1978, but lost in the first round both times. The team finally returned to prominence in the early 1980s under head coach Rollie Massimino. They made four straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 1982 to 1985, including a trip to the Final Four in 1985.

The game was played at Alamodome in San Antonio Texas on April 2nd, 2018. Donte DiVincenzo was named Most Outstanding Player after scoring 31 points off the bench in the victory.

With this championship victory, Villanova joined an elite group of programs that have won three or more NCAA Division I men’s Basketball Championships In addition to their three titles, they also became only the fourth team to win both the National Championship and National Invitation Tournament (NIT).
