The beginning of Florida Memorial baseball

Florida Memorial Baseball started in 1993 as a way to give students an opportunity to compete in a team sport while they were attending school. The team had its first season in 1994, playing a handful of games against other local colleges. Florida Memorial slowly began to add more games to its schedule and, by 1997, was playing a full Division III schedule.

In 1998, Florida Memorial joined the Sun Conference (now The Sun), a Division II conference made up of schools from across the southeastern United States The conference gave Florida Memorial a chance to compete against some of the best teams in the country and helped the program take another step forward.

In just a few short years, Florida Memorial went from being a fledgling team to being a force to be reckoned with on the diamond. The team has won conference championships and made appearances in the NCAA Division II tournament. Under Head Coach Kevin Cooney, who took over in 2002, Florida Memorial has become one of the top programs in Division II baseball

The journey to becoming a top team

The team has made great strides in recent years thanks in part to Head Coach Javy Rodriguez. Coach Rodriguez took over the program in 2016 and has since led the team to new heights. In his first season, the team won just 12 games. But by 2018, the team had increased its win total to 28 – a new program record.

And this past season was even better. The team finished with an impressive 34-22 record, good for second place in their conference. They also made it all the way to the semifinals of the conference tournament where they narrowly lost to eventual champion Keiser University

There’s no doubt that FMU Baseball is on the rise. With Coach Rodriguez at the helm, this team is poised for even more success in the years to come.

The challenges of being a top team

It’s no secret that Florida Memorial University’s baseball team has had its share of challenges in recent years. But despite these difficulties, the team has continued to impress both on and off the field.

In the past few seasons, the team has shown vast improvement, thanks in part to the efforts of Head coach Marc Pavao. Under his leadership, the team has won back-to-back conference championships and earned a spot in the NCAA Division II tournament.

Pavao attributes much of the team’s success to their hard work and dedication, both on and off the field. “Our guys have bought into what we’re trying to do here,” he said. “They understand the importance of taking care of business in the classroom and on the diamond.”

The team’s hard work has certainly paid off, as they are currently ranked No. 3 in the nation by perfect game USA. This is the highest ranking any Sunshine State Conference team has ever achieved.

With such high expectations, there is always pressure to perform at a high level. But Pavao and his players are up for the challenge. “We know that we have a target on our backs, but we embrace that pressure,” Pavao said. “It motivates us to work even harder and be even better.”

So far this season, the team has lived up to its ranking, posting an impressive 27-5 record. With still half of their season left to play, Florida Memorial is poised to make a run at a National Championship No matter what happens from here on out, one thing is certain – this is a team on the rise that is worth keeping an eye on.

The key to success staying humble

Hayes, the team has won two conference championships and made two appearances in the NCAA Division II postseason tournament.

But for Hayes, the key to his team’s success has been its ability to stay humble and not get ahead of itself.

“We’ve been fortunate to have some Great players come through our program,” Hayes said. “But I think the biggest reason for our success is that we’ve always taken things one day at a time and tried not to get too far ahead of ourselves.”

The results speak for themselves: in four seasons under Hayes, the Florida Memorial Baseball team has won more games than any other program in the Sunshine State Conference.

The importance of team chemistry

Good team chemistry is often the difference between a team that makes it to the playoffs and a team that doesn’t. Florida Memorial’s baseball team has made vast improvements in their overall record in the last few years and part of that has been attributed to the team’s strong bond with each other.

bonds with each other, whether it be through shared excitement after a Big Win or consoling each other after a tough loss.

The importance of team chemistry was evident during Florida Memorial’s run to the Conference Championship game last season. After dropping the first game of the tournament, the players could have easily given up and accepted defeat. Instead, they leaned on each other and fought their way back to reach the title game. Even though they ultimately fell short of their goal, it was clear that this was a team that enjoyed being around each other and playing for each other.

This year, Florida Memorial has picked up right where they left off and they currently sit atop the Conference Standings The team has once again shown their resolve by coming back from behind in several games to win. As long as they continue to trust and rely on each other, there is no doubt that this team will be celebrating another successful season come May.

The future of Florida Memorial baseball

The future looks bright for the Lions as they return 19 players from last year’s team, including nine starters. The pitching staff will be led by junior ace Kyle Simpson, who went 10-1 with a 2.68 ERA last season. The Lions will also be bolstered by the addition of transfer student Josh Palmer, who was named First Team All-American by the National junior college Athletic Association (NJCAA) last season.
