Most people in the Lowcountry know about the three big High school basketball rivals: Fort Dorchester, Summerville, and Ashley Ridge. But what people may not know are the origins of these intense rivalries.
The first rivalry began in 1956 when Fort Dorchester won the state championship in its very first year of existence. This victory put them at odds with Summerville, who had been the dominant team in the area for years. The two teams met again in the state championship in 1957, which Summerville won, and they’ve been bitter rivals ever since.
The second rivalry started somewhat innocently enough in 1986 when Ashley Ridge opened its doors as a brand new school. Located just down the road from Fort Dorchester, it was only natural that the two schools would become rivals in sports. But things really heated up on the basketball court in 2002 when Ashley Ridge upset Fort Dorchester to win the state championship Since then, these two teams have met every year in what has become one of the most hotly contested rivalries in all of South Carolina
