Garrett Wilson was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on September 5, 1992. He is the son of alumni of the University of Michigan Garrett’s father, Mark Wilson, played hockey for the Wolverines from 1982-1986 while his mother, Cindy Wilson (nee Zavada), was a member of the women’s synchronized swimming team. Garrett has two older sisters, Bailey and Brooke. The family still resides in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Garrett Wilson started playing hockey when he was just three years old and began skating when he was five. He played Youth Hockey for the Ann Arbor Ice Cube before moving on to play for USA Hockey’s national team Development Program from 2007-2009. In 2009-2010, Garrett played for the University of Michigan where he was named Rookie of the Year. The following season, he led the team in scoring with 21 goals and 36 assists for 57 points in 42 games. After his sophomore year, Garrett decided to forego his final two years of eligibility and turn pro.
