Bird was drafted into the NBA by the Pacers with the sixth overall pick in 1979. He started his NBA Career with a bang, winning the NBA Rookie of the Year Award after averaging 21.3 points per game 6.4 rebounds per game and 4.5 assists per game He quickly became one of the best players in the league, and was selected to his first All-Star Game in 1981. He would go on to be selected to twelve straight All-Star Games from 1981 to 1992.

Bird was an instant success on the court, and helped lead the Pacers to six playoff appearances in his seven seasons with the team. However, Bird’s time with the Pacers ended on a sour note, as he infamously missed a critical free throw that would have given the Pacers a win in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series against the Philadelphia 76ers in 1987. The Sixers went on to win the series in seven games, and Bird was subsequently traded to the Celtics later that offseason.

Bird would go on to have even more success with the Celtics, winning three NBA championships (1981, 1984, 1986) and being named NBA Finals MVP twice (1984, 1986). He is widely considered one of the greatest players in Celtics history, and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2005.
