Grand Rapids Northview was founded in 1966, and the Basketball team quickly became one of the most successful programs in the state. The team won its first state championship in 1970, and would go on to win two more in 1972 and 1973. In 1974, the team made its first appearance in the NCAA tournament where it would lose to eventual National Champion UCLA.
The 1970s were a decade of dominance for Grand Rapids Northview, as the team won six state championships between 1970 and 1979. The team also made five appearances in the NCAA Tournament during this time period, but was unable to get past the second round.
In 1980, Grand Rapids Northview player Isiah Thomas would be drafted by the Detroit Pistons with the second overall pick in the NBA draft Thomas would go on to have a Hall of Fame career, winning two NBA championships with the Pistons.
