Hilo Baseball: History
Hilo Baseball has been a community staple since the late 1800s. The first organized baseball games in Hilo were played in 1878, and the sport quickly gained popularity. In the early years, teams were mostly made up of plantation workers. By the early 1900s, there were several semi-professional teams in Hilo. In addition to being a fun pastime, baseball was also a way for people of different ethnicities to come together. Plantation workers of Japanese, Filipino, Portuguese, and Hawaiian descent all played on the same teams.
Hilo Baseball became even more popular in the 1920s when several professional players from the mainland United States came to play in Hawaii. These players brought with them new ideas and techniques that improved the quality of play. The first night game was played in Hilo in 1930, and it was such a success that more night games were scheduled.
During World War II, many of the young men who would have been playing baseball were drafted into the military. As a result, the quality of play declined and attendance at games dropped. After the war ended, interest in Hilo Baseball slowly started to increase again. In recent years there has been a renewed interest in the history of Hilo Baseball and efforts are being made to preserve its legacy.
